I am having a problem with my 6 volt charging system. It will not charge but if I take the lid off the regulator and push the contacts together , then it does. As soon as I let go of this contact it kicks right back out. This tractor sat without a battery for a while. Could I need to "polarize the system again and If so does anyone know how? Or do I just plain old need a regulator? thank you

Alan - Most likely you need a new regulator!

However a couple things you can try first: 1 - Make sure the regulator base is solidly grounded (remove the reg and sand mating surfaces then remount tightly). 2 - Polarize: Momentarily connect the BAT and ARM regulator terminals with the engine stopped.

Is there one set of points, or 2 or three? If just one set under the cover, you got a cut-out wich works in conjunction with a four way light switch. The bottom 2 notches on light switch are for high and low charge. If there is multiple sets of points, then you got a regulator. It works independantly and does not need the use of the 4-way light switch, which is why these were equiped with 3-way light switches from factory. I got the cut out and four way switch on mine. I do know that when in the high charge setting, I have to have the engine reved up to put out enough juice to close the points in the cut out. Then it will show a charge on the ampe gauge. If you have a 4-way switch and cut-out, make sure you are not trying to overcharge the battery. Don't have to worry about that with regulator. Electrical system does have to be polarized at the generator. There is three terminals, and I can't remember wich 2 you breifly jump together to polarize. As long as you show a positive charge and not a negative charge it is right. One more thing, remember that the H was originally positive ground from factory. That means the postive post on tractor was hooked up grounded to tractor and the negative post to the power point. Not sure what year they changed from cut-out to regulator, but remeber this- most of these H's have been altered from there original electrical system one way or another. Check yours out. If you got it from somebody else, it is hard to tell what they tried to do.

Yes Mine only has one post. I will try the lite switch thing and see if this helps. As for the positive ground situation. I do remember the older ones being positive ground. This one is hooked up as neg. ground, so can I unhook the battery and rehook it up with the starter wire going to the neg. or will this blow up my battery now that it is already charged "backwards"? Thanks guys

Alan – You’ve got the older cutout system. In order for it to work EVERY component (cutout relay, light switch and of course the wiring) must be in good working order.

Since the system has not been charging it’s unlikely your battery got charged backward – and even if it did it wouldn’t have enough stooch to crank the motor. So go ahead and reconnect the battery properly (positive post to ground). Then polarize the generator by momentarily jumpering the two terminals on the cutout.

If the system still does not charge, recommend you get rid of cutout and replace it with a new voltage regulator. It’ll cost less, and it will maintain the battery better than the old cutout system did. And wiring up a regulator is straightforward.
