Since the search is down on this board I will have to ask before looking. My dad and I have a 1945 Farmall A in real nice shape but it came with rusty implements. I want to clean up the cultivators and make 'em all spiffy and pretty so I could present them to my dad for Father's Day or maybe his birthday depending how long it takes to work thru the rusty parts. Problem is that I'm not sure what color to paint them after I prime them with some rust inhibitor. I think I remember reading on here that blue was the color for all the Farmall implements. But what shade of blue is the blue color called? What if I just used Farmall Red to paint the cultivator parts, would that be sacriligious to keep everything Farmall Red instead of blue? What do you think???

Thanks Much from both my Dad and I..

Paul

You can get the IH blue from your IH dealer. Ace hardware stores can also get it, but they'll probably have to order it.

The blue does look really smart and is worth doing.
Rust i use a 10: water and molasses. Stinks a bit but is cheap and does the job. Need to leave thinks soaking about a week.
For the right blue colour there are bound to be someone close who can give a piece painted on some card or the colour code. (I am in New Zealand so our codes mean nothing (+ vice versa)
Have a look at www.shsw.com I think Sate Hist soc of Wisconcin and the mcCormick collection. They have teh paint committee decisions and you can see the memos detailing what parts were painted what coloyur. Interesting reading.

In high school,we had an ag mechanics class where we restored several old Farmalls. When we rebuilt a Super C for a guy ,the cultivators on it were blue, and you could tell it had been like that for some time, whether or not it was factory I dont know, but we repainted them blue with a can of Ford blue that a local body shop donated.Looked real good.

Hi Paul,

I don't know if it will help you but this is the paint scheme of our Farmall cultivators when they came from the dealer new:

Frame was Farmall red, tool bars, shields & clamps were blue.

The shanks were black on the original machines, but the replacements could come in either red, blue or black.

Here again, replacement clamps came in either blue or black.

Hope this helps,

Allan

Do you know what number of cultivator it was? Was it for an A of B? I'm puting one on my B, and have been trying to figure out how it's supposed to be painted and decaled. (I'm assuming they had decals on them) Thanks

David,

I can't remember their model #'s, but we had one cultivator, which we swapped back and forth between an M and an H. It was a two row 38"/40" row spacing model. I watched the dealer rep and my dad put it together right out of the crate; took all of one day, as I recall. We used it to cultivate corn and potatoes for many years.

Later, we bought a four-row "fast hitch" design for use with the 400D, which was a total rear mount, of course. It was with this later cultivator that we began to see that the fast hitch was on it's way out. The implements were just getting too darned heavy for this design.

For sugar beets and beans we had still another belly mount model in a six-row 22" design. We mounted this cultivator on the H.

Anyway, my point being that all of these cultivators had the same identical color schemes (and they covered quite a number of years).

They really looked sharp when new and I do remember the yellow decals with black lettering being on the implements, but as to what they were, what they said and were they were placed escapes me. Too many years gone by.

It always struck me odd that replacement parts could end up being any old color, blue, black or red....maybe it was the color of the day when these parts were manufactured. Dunno.

Hope this helps,

Allan

I have a shredder (brush hog) and a disc plow that came with my tractor ('44 "A".) They are both as faded as my tractor. Judging from the bright fire engine red of refurbished tractors, I would take a wild guess and say the blue would be something close to the pure blue you see on postal vehicles. Probably just called blue or medium blue in vehicle paints.
