Very rare IHC tractor ?????

I have been contacted by a gentleman who says he has an extremely rare F20-M cross over tractor. Says it was built very late 1939, has factory hyd., M type steering post and light bar, upright Delco Remy dist., V belt for generator which is mounted up on side, factory orange color, and lastly Ser.# FA142188. He feels it is worth a good deal of money. He is wanting to sell this! What does he really have in your opinion? Thanks for your help!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't the predessesor of the M the F30?

Logically, yes. But IH intended for the M to be the replacement for the F20, the H was the replacement for the F12/14, the A and B were a new line of tractors. This is quoting Guy Fay, who of course can/may respond further. This occurred despite the fact that the A and B essentially have the F12 engine. Marketing was as wierd in 1939 as it is today--just didn't have to watch it on TV all the time.

Not a lot to add other than what the other folks said already. There just weren't any "Crossover" F-20 to M tractors. Factory Hydraulics are nothing special in a F-20, (IH offered conversion kits, so even Regulars can have them) the Delco distributer is aftermarket (even Ms didn't get them until 1950), orange would have noting to do with it. You can contact the IH Archives to see the month it was actually built. The V belt pulley F-20s had I believe sometime in 1936-37. Sounds like someone put generators and lights on a few years later.

Larry: I've been around this old world for about 62 years now, and have yet to see a rare IHC tractor of any model. Now I suppose you could take into account those home modification jobs that have about the same value as the three legged dog.

Rare in my opinion as it applies to tractors is one or two of any given make or model.

In my opinion,hes got a M with the sheetmetal off of it and and thinks hes got a rare 20.Serial number could be something off of a later M that had the bellhousing changed.Or as mentioned and 20 with some added parts. Iwould definately like to see a pic.

If thats the case I guess I have the same one. I have a belly pump, and the late F-20's came with v-belts. The only thing I need to do is put light bar off H or M on. These are not rare.

I just noticed that the serial number should actually make it a 1940, not that it makes any difference in your question. Curious. I had forgotten they made 'em in 1940.

They didn't, Sn is about 6000 from end of production in 1939.

I don't know anything about the F20's however this could be an F20 with other parts used on it. This would make it rare but not valuable unless the factory did it. I had a 3 legged dog one time pretty rare but not worth much to anyone except me :)

Ben, I like your analogy. I am curious about any other comments from other IH collectors as to the rarity of this tractor. At the end I will offer the value this gentleman feels it is worth. Thanks again.

f20s are not rare. they made quite a few. around 154,398.

Pete, I agree! The gentleman in question sent me some pictures today. I will see if I'm smart enough to get them posted. By the way, It is probably time now to mention this man feels his tractor is so rare, he wants $2 Million dollars for it AND I'm not kidding. That is what he wants!

Larry, you should find the address of the nearest Clue store and give it to the seller. He really needs one. Of course he can sell it for 2 million but he would have to send two checks for 4 million each to this guy I know overseas. Takes all kinds. Dick Davis
