This might sound like a dumb question, but Im putting a head gasket on a 130 Farmall(C-123 engine)and Im not 100% sure how it goes. It has "This side out" stamped on it,but what does "Out" exactly mean? I I could see if it said up or down. One side is completely smooth where the other side has about a 1/8 ring going out around clylinder hole. Any help would be great. Thank You!!

The rolled edge against the block is the way to go. This will create a positive seal for the combustion chamber. I agree that the wording can be confusing, more than one head has been taken off because of sutch wording

The side of the gasket with the rolled over rings goes against the block. Smooth side up to the head.

Are you sure?? Why would they have "This side out" stamped on the part that faces the block? I don't know why they would use that kind of wording? Why not use "This side up" or this "This side down"?
Thanks for the help.

Sometimes it is stamped "top" or "up" or something similar.

If it isn't, find the oil gallery hole in the block and make sure that the gasket doesn't cover it. Chances are it will only go one way because the push rods will be blocked off by the gasket.
