I've got a farmall M. i need to know which spark plug wires go where. I also need to know where the #1 plug wire goes. In the front of the motor, or in the back. I need to know where the wires go on the distributor, and which cylinders they go to. I wish I had a manual. Thank you.

Jamie in a post below you say that wiring and timing is right so let me tell you about something I found while trying to start my '39 M, seems like a previous owner had reversed the wires on the switch so it worked as follows, push in start, pull out kill. Hope this helps. Tom

third party image

you can use this image by copying it into your paint program and just connecting the distributor to the engine block diagram

Jamie, I hope this helps: from front to rear of engine is #1 plug, #2 plug, #3 plug, #4 plug. On Distributor it is #1 at 2:00, #2 at 4:00, #3 at 7:00 and #4 at 10:00. Now then run #1 from dist to #1 plug, #2 dist to #3 plug, #3 dist to #4 plug, and #4 dist to #2 plug, and lastly, Center of dist to Coil. If this doesnt work, come back and we'll explain a possible problem in dist timing.

The distributer rotates clockwise as viewed from the rear (the end the cap is on). The #1 terminal on the distributer should be marked and is the upper right.

Jamie, the firing order should be 1342 number 1 cylinder is to the radiator. The best way is to pull number 1 spark plug and bring the piston to top dead center and then look at your dist rotor then you can figure out the order on your dist cap. If you need more help post back and I will walk you through it.Paul SMTA puller

Here's another try. Pull the spark plugs from the cylinders and put your thumb over the #1 hole (closest to the front). Get someone to crank the starter or turn the engine by hand until you feel air pushing your thumb off the hole; that's when the piston is on the compression stroke. Now look at the big pulley at the front of the engine, right below the govenor you should be able to find the timing mark close to the pointer, move the pulley until the mark lines up with the pointer (if all of the spark plugs are out you can crank the engine by turning the fan by hand). While you're turning the engine take a look at the distributor and watch which way the rotor turns.

The engine is now where the spark should fire #1. Loosen the distributor and turn it until the points just open as it climbs up the cam (remember which way the rotor will turn), that's when it will fire. Now put the rotor on the distributor and see where it's pointing, the connector on the distributor cap where the rotor is pointing is the one you want to connect to #1 spark plug, then connect the other plug wires in the firing order.

Thanks for everything everybody. It still wont start. The timing is still slightly off, but we're close. I'm going to get it running tomorrow for sure. I just ran out of day light.

We've been at this again for 3 hours and some. It seems like its on the right timing. The piston is up and its on the timing mark. The rotor is pointing to number one spark plug. I've triple checked the firing order. This thing still wont start. I have no idea why. CAN ANYONE AT ALL HELP

Jamie check the part about the rotation in the distributor by turning the fan blade to pull air thru the rad. Memory tells me that the dist turns CCW. Firing order (again ,memory) is 1,3,4,2. I could be wrong .G'Luck. Mguy.
