I found a 706 that is for sale, the owner says the tractor runs good but has a clogged hydro filter. Where is the filter located and what type is it? Paper, metal screen, canister, etc? Also would a clogged filter stop the power steering from working, or is this a hydro pump problem? If I can start the tractor what should steps should I take to troubleshoot the problem? Sorry about the FNG guy questions but I'm new to tractors with limited experience on model A's and M's. Thanks for your time.

If I were seriously interested in that tractor, I'd offer to buy the filter. Let the seller install it and prove the system is OK. I bet he won't take the deal.

Beware. If it was just a filter change that was needed wouldnt he just do it so he could get more for his tractor?
I have seen a few hydros come though the auctions.
They dont bring much there.
Wish I knew how to fix them. Would be able to get some for good prices.

How much do they sell for at the sales?

Not sure what models they were. They where Hydros though. Some of the more knowledgable where on them trying to get them to move, with no luck maybe a little lurching. Went for about $1000.
Nice tractors otherwise.

There's no such thing as a 706 Hydro. I believe he's talking about the HYDRAULIC system.

Beware, the term "Hydro" has special meaning amongst IH lovers :)

Cut the filter open and look at the content. You will be looking for metal filings. They would be silver in appearance. If the filter is clean check to make sure that the O-ring behind the filter is installed correctly. If all of this checks out O.K. then get the hydualics up to operating temp by driving the tractor. Once it is up to temp then you can check to see how strong the hydros are by applying the breaks. These are opperated by the power steering pump and so they should work fine. If the hydros shows any sign of slipping, beware!!

How hard is to chnage the PS pump? What do you mean by "If the hydros shows any sign of slipping, beware!! " ?

Thanks,
Glen

I would walk with caution. The hyd filter is on the right side below the platform. I would look at the filter really close and if the powersteering does not work there is a pump attached to the inside of the MCV valve that supplies the TA-steering-and a few other things this is a $200 pump. I just had one put on my 806 at the dealers and it cost nearly $500 installed with new hy-tran and filter.
I am no expert but have written a few large checks out for hyd repairs on those farmalls and they were never cheap. I honestly doubt that a filter will be a cure all but hopefully it will.
