Gears Grinding in Cub

A Cub I bought grinds the gears slightly (reverse and 2nd) when I shift; however, once I shift it into gear, I can change to another gear without problems if I keep the clutch in. I can hear the transmission turning a little when the clutch is in. Here's what I tried so far:

1. I replaced the throwout bearing. The clutch disk looked to be a good thickness, but I didn't remove the pressure plate to look at the faces.
2. I adjusted the clutch pedal until the throwout bearing was 1/8" from the plate. At this point, I could hear some "grinding" when I pushed the pedal all the way down with the tractor in neutral. The pedal also would push back on my foot. Also, regardless of what I do, the rear pulley always grinds when I try to engage it.

I adjusted the pedal until the grinding sound in #2 stopped, and that's where I am now. I now have a bearing clearance of about 3/16". It seems to me that the transmission is still turning a little when I put the clutch in, but when I put it into gear it stops turning; maybe it's not completely disengaging. I would like to know what else I could do to fix this, or at least find out why I'm having this problem. Thank you.

I have the same problem, but when my cub is in neutral, it gives of a ear splitting grinding noise and it looks like my clutch pedal shakes. what would cause this?

I actually may have just figured that out. I was out adjusting my clutch pedal, and if the throwout bearing was less than 1/8" from the pressure plate, the bearing (which tends to wobble a bit)would keep hitting the plate levers. This caused a grinding type noise. After I moved the bearing back, it stopped. You can move the bearing back by loosening a 5/8" bolt at the base of your clutch pedal, then moving the metal arm back. Do this while you're looking at your bearing's position. This may do it.

I did what you suggested, and it helped. What I found was that the outside edges of the throwout bearing were getting chewed up by the levers when I pressed the clutch in (that was the grinding sound I heard and felt on the pedal). I adjusted the levers, and that made the clutch work a lot better; however, I still have the 2nd/reverse grinding problem. I watched my BN clutch as I pushed the clutch lever down, and noticed how the shaft and disk slowed and stopped. I did this with my Cub, and found that the shaft slowed considerably, but started to pick up speed again. It seems the little bit of grease I stupidly applied to the pilot bearing might be helping the shaft stick to the bearing a little. The way I can get around my problem is to first put the Cub in 1st gear, then shift to 2nd or reverse; for some reason 1st and 3rd aren't having problems. First gear slows the shaft to a stop, then I can shift to 2nd/reverse. I know the best fix is to break the tractor in half and do it properly, but that's for next summer. Did you also adjust the fingers on the pressure plate.I cant for life of me recall what the clearince should be but it sounds just like mine did.I dont recall if you adjust them out or in.The fingers are hittng the metal part of the throw out bearing.

Is your clutch all lined up?

The clutch simply isnt releasing all the way right? Sounds like alot of play somewhere.
