Value of Farmall 656 gas?????

I am going to look at a Farmall 656 gas with wide front and fast hitch converted to 3 point. It is suppose to have 5000 original hours and is a one owner. What is a tractor like this worth in Wisconsin and what are the weak points of it? Would a tractor like this pull a NI 5209 disc bine (mower conditioner)?

The reason I am looking at another tractor is because I thought the farm would be sold so I sold my 886 hoping I didn't have to make hay. Now I have the discbine left and an International 574 gas to try and pull it. I don't think that would work so I was looking for an inexpensive tractor to see if I could limp through about 75 acres.

I bought a 656 gas, narrow front new in 1969 and still run it daily. It's my loader tractor,pull the square baler with it, pick up round bales and run the mix mill with it. I've got over 10,000 hours on it and had a rebuild at 6500 hours. It's been a real reliable tractor with minimal maintenance.

I'd say a fair price would be $3000-$4000. It's a 65 HP (roughly) tractor, and it will work hard on that discbine. The drawback is fuel consumption. You'll pay more for a similarly-sized diesel because you are buying greater longevity and lower operating costs.

Mornin' Ed,

If you are lookin' just to get thru this season, you'll probably be okay, as you can always sell that tractor later; a lot of guys like 'em for loader tractors and they are very popular.

However, a steady diet of 75 acres is gonna make 'er drink like a sailor, in my humble opinion.

If you lived close, you could sure use my diesel as it needs to be put to work anyway. :>)

Ed: Assuming a 656 diesel is worth $5,000. the gasser is little more than a parts tractor. With the price of fuel going the way it has been, that will be the fate of most 40 hp plus gas tractors.

Makes a guy want to figure a way to repower a 656 gas to diesel.
Have to keep an eye out for some army suplus diesels.
Like I dont already have enough projects.

I've had my 10ft New Holland 1411 discbine on my 686 deisel {a newwer version of the 656} and it worked the snot out of it. A 656 gas would probily burn or stick valves if you work it that hard. I would say $3000 to $4000 would be a fair price if its in exellent condition. Remember a IH 6 cylinder gas engine on average needs a rebuild every 3000 hours.

i have been seeing them sell for around 3000 and believe that is a good value. But they will burn a lot of gas. if are going to do much with it I would recomend a diesel. As far a pulling a disk bine they take a lot of power. a nine ft machine would be plenty load in big hay.
