1206 starts hard

I bought a 1206 and it starts hard. It turns over awhile before starting. Once running it runs real good. The batterys test good but it seems to turn slower than our 856. But the batterys keep turning it till it starts. A friend told me that all 06 series start hard. Is this true or am I looking to overhaul it? It has smoke coming out exhaust when it is turning over. It has clean air filters in it. Any help on how to make it start better would be appreciated.

Joe,

I read somewhere, someplace that a diesel needs to spin at least 250rpm to start (could be model specific).

If it seems slow cranking to you, it probably is; starter, charging system or batteries perhaps?

If it runs fine after it pops, I doubt if you have an engine problem. That smoke while it is cranking tells you it is getting fuel.

My guess,

Allan

Around these parts, the 806/1206 is generally regarded as a hard-starting tractor.

There are many possible causes for hard starting, many of which have already been listed. It could be the engine, but if it's making good power and doesn't use much oil, probably not. It could be the injector pump, or any of the dozens of fuel line connections causing the pump to lose its prime between starts.

The 806 and 1206 were vary good starters , it could be that the starter is in need of a rebuild as the bushings are probably woren and it could be draggen on the fields or the injection pump is low on cranking pressure or that the engine compression could be down from the valves being resessed in the head to far and this will cause low compression or the injestors are not cracking at the wright opening pressure. or it could be in need of a major overhaul.
