Hi Board!
Sorry to be off topic but this site seems to be the best source of info to date... there isn't too much traffic on the truck site.
While removing wheels, drums, brakes, and backing plates from front end, a shadow of a "C" shown faintly from the left front frame rail horn. Just between the front spring hanger and the shock absorber was the numbers I've been looking for (C15 and 3492). Can anyone tell me how the series numbers relate to tonage? Specificly model "C" series 15. Is it a 1 ton, or 3/4 ton?
Also, since there is no paper on this truck, it would be of great help if someone could tell what year SN 3492 would have been built. With this information, I think I can get good paper for it.
Thanks for your patience. I'll try not to bug too much about this ol' IHC.

According to CH Wendel who wrote 150 Years of IH, C-15 is a valid model #.

The models are arranged in this order

C-1 = 1/2 ton
C-5 = 3/4 ton
C-10 = 1 ton
C-12 = 1 1/4 ton
C-15 = 1 1/2 ton

The largest trucks were C-60. That is probably a six ton truck and matched the largest screw drive Mack of the period which would have been 35,000 GVW. The biggest Macks were 100,000 GVW and had tandem chain drives.

Ton and a half trucks usually had GVWs around 17,000 lbs. That should give you a payload around four/five tons. Top speed is probably around 45 mph.

You probably have 20" rims. I am guessing that tire size is 6.00-20 or 6.50-20. Later ton and a halfs had 7.50-20 rubber.

Can't help you with serial numbers/year. Ton and a half trucks were very popular into the '60s. One tons stole alot of their sales after that.

"C" model trucks were made 1934 to 1936. The C15 was not introduced till 1936 & was a "fill in" truck between the 3/4 ton C12 & the 1 to 1 1/2 ton C20. It had a rating of 3/4 to 1 ton with a 136" wheel base. 234 cu in engine @78.5hp model HD2. 3 spd tran. Full floating single reduction rear end. Chassis cost was $545.00. !936 was the first year all trucks had hydraulic brakes. There were 3584 C-15s made in Springfield & 239 made in Chatham plants in 1936. C models were replaced with the "D" models in April, 1937. It would seem you have a rare truck, Only being made for 1 year with 3823 made. Many different types of bodies were used including a "station wagon" on the "C" models. If I can get any other info you need, let me know. My email is available.
