I am looking to buy a new muffler for my H. My CIH dealer can't get them any more. Who sells them as an after market product?

My local Case-IH dealer keeps them in stock. Or, I can visit any of the farm and ranch supply stores from here to wherever and find one.

Rusty,

But does the dealer stock that original? The one with the smaller outlet that gives an H that distinctive "ring" sound?

Thanks,

Allan

Alan, It depends on what year your tractor was made as to what muffler came on it. Even the mufflers with the small outlet may have been original to one year, but not necessarily for another year. When the H first came out in 1939, the mufflers did not have the long outlet pipe, but rather a short outlet of about 2 1/2 inches. Those mufflers would rust in about 3 years. Even the first replacements had the short outlet. They then, (not particularly in proper sequence) had small outlet mufflers with rounded tops, then came rounded tops and rounded bottoms, then flat bottoms with beveled tops. Which one did your H have when it was new? Hard to tell. Therefore, it is almost impossible to find the "correct" mkuffler. The ones that Marks tractors carries is close in a lot of respects, but to say that it is original for the year you have is not very probable. To the best of my recollection, the long slim outlets didnt come about until after the war which would have been around 1945 or 46.

CNKS, You may be right as to the years that the long outlet mufflers appeared. I do know that it was after the war. From the pictures of the ones that Marks tractors is offering, I would say that they are original type only in that they do indeed have the long, smaller outlet, but there were several versions of that style as to shape of the tops and bottoms (not inlet and outlet pipes) as well as seams and welds, and baffling. In this day and time, I suppose they are as original looking as one can get for the post WWII mufflers. Its sort of like Bill Clintin saying "it depends on what the meaning of the word is is". And yes, I would hope they last $79.00 worth.

No, the only place I know of to get one of those is from Mark's Tractors, and so far I haven't convinced my bank account that it is required.

Two more questions - Didn't IH go to one muffler that fit 17 different tractors to save a little money ? Does the smaller outlet muffler make any difference on low end torque ?

I guess i don't know if it made any difference in performance, but it did make the H quieter.

LOL!

I can relate to that. I've definetly noticed that my banker hops across to the other side of the street when he sees me comin'.

I don't think these banker types really understand the "Old Tractor Affliction" syndrome and it's resulting "I really need it" effect. :>)

Signed,

Spent A. Lot

Red4ever, Your Case NH dealer can indeed get a replacement muffler for your H. It may not be the exact replica that was on the tractor when new, because the mufflers have changed through the years, but they can get the mufflers. I agree with the others who posted before me in that someone in your neighborhood case NH parts dept is either inept of just plain lazy.

Your dealer CAN get one, just too lazy to look. Tell him to look in his direct ship muffler catalog, or his "Parts Buyers Guide". I'm a parts man at an Astec/Case (underground construction equipment) dealer now, and was with a New Holland dealer before,we all have the same availability through CNH Parts direct ship program.
