That's a good question! The A gas tractor Nebraska figures are 18.34 MBHP and 16.32 MDBHP. IH's 'corrected' figures for the A gas are 19.06 and 17.35 respectively. These figures are at 1400 rated RPM.

The Super A was not tested at Nebraska. Instead, Nebraska published figures for the Super A using the A test figures.

I have read where the Super A in reality has more horsepower than the A because some (all?) of the Supers run at a higher rated RPM, therefore it stands to reason the Super A would be a bit stronger on the dyno.

Don't forget about the Super A-1. That one's a mystery to me, too.

I have not run across any published data explicitly saying exactly what the Super A is supposed to put out. This question should generate a lot of feedback as it seems the A/Super A is the most talked about model on this forum.

I will wager a doughnut that Harold H has the appropriate information.

Joe: Interesting part about your post is IH quoted different figures for each of A, SA, SA1, 100, 130 and 140. The first two having 113 cu in engine and the later four having 123 cu in. Engine rpm went from 1400 in the A to 1575 in 100, 130 and 140. That 1575 figure I just took from IT manual and I seem to remember IH quoting 1650 somewhere re 130, years ago.

Over the years I have owned 6 of these offsets and really never paid much attention to hp as they were designed to do specific jobs where hp really never counted. While I realize three individual tractors are not much of a test, now that I have the time to play around a bit, I really can't see much difference between my Super A, 130 and 140. When it comes to power they are so close, I wouldn't want to call one over the other. Traction is a bit different as my Super A has 9.5x24 no weight added. 130 has 12.4x24 with wheel weights and 140 has 11.2x24 with chloride. When it comes to a good pull requiring traction the 130 and 140 do have the advantage. However I'm also thinking because diameter of the 9.5x24 tire is substancially smaller, this tends to make the Super A look great on the horsepower side.

One would normally think of the C-123 tractors being substancially more powerful. One thing I learned in my years around tractors, and much bigger tractors than these, is more rubber is the very best way to put horsepower on the ground. However when you start increasing the diameter of that rubber you better have the horse power to turn it.

Hugh, you said a VERY important thing, and one that I need to brain-file for immediate recall in the future.

"Over the years I have owned 6 of these offsets and really never paid much attention to hp as they were designed to do specific jobs where hp really never counted".

The A types were indeed, designed for specific tasks, and they did (still do!) them well. It's fun to quote horsepower (mine's bigger'n yours), but in the big scheme of things, it is what gets done that counts.

Joe: I've said that one before, "what gets done that counts." A friend of mine bought one of the newer offsets in 1984, (274) with the oriental diesel, three years later after an engine job that took close to 3 months in the works, during the heavy cultivating season, it was sold. He had gone out in the meantime and purchased a 35 year old Super A to do the job. The last tine I talked with him the Super A is still doing the job. So they still do account for some commercial agriculture.

According to Guy Fay's Tractor Data Book it has 17.35 at the drawbar and 19.06 on the pto.
