MY A CAME WITH A BELLY MOWER BUT I CANNOT GET THE BELT TO THREAD RIGHT . I DID NOT THINK THIS WOULD BE THAT DIFFICULT BUT I SURE CAN'T FIGURE IT OUT. ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED AS I AM LOST. I HAVE NO I.D. ON THE MOWER WHICH DOES NOT HELP. THE BELT COMING FROM THE PTO WONT CLEAR THE REAR AXLE HOUSING.

I would like to know first of all what kind or type of mower you have ? I have a "mott mower" which has a couple hundred small 5" blades which attach to a main shaft which runs horizontal, perpendicular to the tractor. There are however other types of mowers, I believe called finishing mowers. Woods, as mentioned makes these and I believe they have 3 or 4 blades similiar to a normal lawn mower. I can only speek of the mott mower cause that is what I have. There are two main parts to it...the first is the actual mower, the second is the idler pulleys that attach to the drawbar. There is also a double belted pully that mounts on the shaft coming out perpendicular to the tractor. This leads to a double pulley on the "idler assembly, and then on the other side of that is a single belt pulley that goes off to the pulley on the mower. This last belt is crossed or in a "8" pattern in order to change direction.

I am sure that you are running of the belt pulley correct as the pto doesent have enough clearence for the big pulley it would take to run the blades. How many spindles does the deck have you didnt say. Are your blades right or left hand rotation as all you need to do is the way the belt goes around the center spindle on a three spindle set-up . Please advise as to what you have.

I am by no means positive but here goes.
it seems you may be missing some brackets for your mower. i have an a myself and bought a mower from the steam show near me . when i bought it i was told that it was for a cub. another source told me it would work on my a but i needed to cross the belt because the pulley turned opposite the cub. now the mower came with a bracket setup that attached to the drawbar but had arms that held pulleys on each side the pulleys were ajustable as it looks to tighten belt as well as to have a different hight to cross the belt. i had seen this on some tractors but not others and didn't know why. when i was told about the difference it accured to me that i was looking at cubs and a's and didn't notice the difference as being models.
hope this helps. i like to read this forum because i don't know much about the a and cub and can learn more by what others know and will tell as they have experienced.

Joe, do you have the idler pulleys on the tractor? If so, are they adjusted right? The belt should come off the pto pulley, then each end of belt should ride on the idlers. The idlers guide the belt around the axle, and also make the 90 degree turn. I think you are missing the idler pulleys. E-mail me, and I'll try to get pictures. I've got an IH C3 mower deck on my A, and a Woods on my MH Pony..... .Stan
