IH 454 Clutch replacement

What kind of job will I be getting into ?
I see several mentions of doing a "split", which
I assume is spliting the transmission from engine.
Never attempted something this complex on a tractor. Any words of wisdom are welcome !!!

If the clutch is not slipping, I would try adjusting it first. The adjustment is done by lengthing the rod by the clutch pedal. Should have about 3/4 to 1" free play. Make sure your clutch return spring is not broken. This spring pulls the clutch pedal to it its resting place so that the release bearing does not touch the pressure plate fingers.

There is an ispection plate in the bottom of the bell housing that allows visual inspection of the release bearing and pressure plate.

It is not a difficult job to replace clutch pressure plate and bearings. About 4 to 5 hrs.
for the inexperienced. An IH mechanic probably can do it in 2 to 3 hrs if there is no loader frame to remove.

I don't recommend doing the job yourself unless you have experience at this type of work and access to the proper tools. When you split the tractor in two, you are dealing with two very heavy pieces of machinery supported by hydraulic jacks.

My dad is experienced in doing these types of
"operations", and he's confident we can fix it.
We have enough heavy-duty jacks, safety jacks,
etc to make an attempt, so wish us luck !!

Got the split done fairly easy.. Spent the most
time getting the temp.sensor removed. It didn't
work anyway, so I've ordered a new guage/assmbly.
The pressure plate fingers were shot, as was the
throwout bearing. Rattles worse than a pair of
those old ball-bearing skates we had as kids !!
New parts on the way (Bates Corp), and I should be back in
bidness. Cost of PP, clutch disk, TO and pilot
bearings was right at $300.. with a credit for
the core return of the PP and clutch disk of $60.

Why don't you try to adjusting that clutch first; might save you a bunch of work.
