just brought home a 504 this weekend. have a question about the pto. when lever is disengaged the pto still turns but will stop with hand pressure. is this normal? also when the lever is pushed all the way forward the shaft then will stop. it looks like there is a mechanism for locking the handle forward but part of it looks like it is broken, a small tab sort of. is this the only way to stop the shaft completely? this is a utility model. thanks for any help.

Steve: That pto has a brake to keep it from turning when not engaged. There should be a push button type rod going down the lever that latches lever in the foreward position. It is designed so you slightly push ahead on lever and push button to unlock. When you push foreward on lever it should latch in brake position on it's own.

These tend to get worn or broken, just a little pivot latch at base of lever. Another item that will cause them not to latch or stay latched is bad bushing in pivot of pto engage lever itself. Not a terribly hard item to fix up, and without it working a bit dangerous hooking up to pto. There should also be an adjustment in linkage for adjusting this brake.

thanks for the info hugh. the broken pivot latch describes it pretty well, was just wondering if the shaft should continue to turn when disengaged, sounds like thats pretty normal. sounds like you have one of these machines yourself. am curious what size of rear tires you might have on it. the ones on the machine i just bought seem unuasually wide. thanks again.

Steve: Actually I had two tractors with that pto at one time in my farming days. Mine were both Farmalls 504 and a 560. You say International so I gather yours is a Utility. My 504 had 13.6x38 and 560 had 16,9x38. I'm not just sure what the Utility tractors had, probably 28" wheel and wider than the Farmall.

That pto also has an internal adjustment for the pto clutch pack. I will not try to describe that, you best go to the manual for that. The clutch pack adjustment should be checked probably every year. Manual will probably give it to you in hours on tracror meter. Another item to watch closely if your tractor is so equiped is TA and clutch adjustment. Again manual is way to go. I would only confuse you, too much room for error in use of terminology.

thanks again hugh, this tractor is a utility and does have a TA. there is no noticable difference in ground speed when the TA is engaged so i guess as you say i should look at a manual and see about adjustment. Bought this machine cheap because it needs a little attention, probably will do fluid and filter change this weekend. After that will have to address the power steering and loader not working, steering acts like it wants to work when tractor is sitting still or moving at slow speeds, other than that it wont work at all. have new hydraulic filter and i figured that was a good place to start. thanks again hugh, you will probably see many posts from me in the upcoming weeks.
