D310 Help Me Understand?

Mornin' All,

I've read many times here that the 310 has a compression ratio of 15:1 and my "Red Mech" says this too.

My diesel IT manual says the 310 has a ratio of 16:1.

Is my manual wrong?

Allan

As per service manual from IH GSS-1377-1 it is 16-1.

Hi Ras,

So the 15:1 story is kinda like an old wives' tale or something?

Thanks,

Allan

Allan, this is somthing I've always been confused about myself. If you check the parts manual for the 310 or 358 engine, it will list several different pistons. It will specify "high-ratio" pistons for late-model 3088 tractors. However, if you go to the service manual, it will state that all 310 and 358 engines have 16:1 compession. I can't remeber where, but I have seen the 15:1 compression ratio listed somewhere. Now, I have spent many hours on a '70 826 with a 358, a '79 686 with a 310, a '81 786 with a 358, and a '82 3088 with a 358 (an early model, the 104th one built). I have also been around 706's and 756's with 310's. The 786 and the 3088 start ten times easier than any of the older tractors. So, I think it is obvious that the compression was raised from 15:1 to 16:1 at some point in time, but I would like to know when, and if putting late-model pistons in an early engine is possible, and if it improves starting.
