W-450?

I was reading the discussion on wheatland tractors. A neighbor has a W-450 for sale. It has the Farmall nameplates on it, just like the regular 450. Is this correct? It has power steering (pump mounted on engine) and live hydraulics (pump mounted on front of tractor). Are these original? It does have the power steering tag on the steering wheel. Also, the serial number is 1339. What year would this be? Thanks for any help as I know very little about these tractors!

Just for information we us a W450 diesel (gas start) and it says International on the hood. Even the parts men say Farmall when ever we go to get parts but it is an International. Don't know if they all were. It's hard to think a Farmall hood would fit on but maybe it would. It's a good tractor.

I have a 1957 W-450, which I recently bought from the son of the neighboring orchardist; I used to use this tractor 20 years ago when I leased his orchard and ran the two together.

The one I have has the larger engine, as Guy says, and factory PS [interstingly/confusingly, the service manual reprinted by Binder for this model does NOT show the corre3ct PS unit; I had to contact a helpful dealer who copied the correct page from the regular Farmall 450 manual.

The hydraulics are integral on mine, but I don't have my owner's manual handy to check whether they were optional, in which case yours could have been added later.

Live PTO and TA were options, which I do not have. So was a muffler, which I do!

Enjoy your tractor: they are powerful strong-pulling old iron!

I believe it should have "International" nameplates on the sides, not Farmall. At least that's what I see on the pictures I found on the web.

Based on the data I have, it appears that the W-450 did not benefit from an engine size upgrade from the W-400 like the Farmall 450 (281 CID) did when it replaced the Farmall 400 (264 CID).

The W-450 has a 264 CID engine same as the W-400, and Nebraska published test figures for the W-450 using the W-400 figures. The W-450 was not tested at Nebraska.

MBHP for the gasoline W-450 is 51.94, and its MDBHP is 45.84

Other than that, I don't know squat about them. They are rather handsome beasts.

International W450 gas, W450 LPG, and W450 diesel were tested at Nebraska and as Guy Fay mentioned below, and they did get engine upgraded from the W400 264 to 281. I don't have my test results here but they were tested.

Yes, the W-450s got the engine upgrade. What is your source that they didn't? W-9 Series didn't get an upgrade between the W-9 and WR-9S, is that what yuo were thinking of?

Egg on my face, mea culpa. Trying to find a chair to hide under.

When I saw the two maestros responding, I thought something was up. I was spewing incorrect information.

I consulted Guy's book, and the 281 IS listed for the W-450. In my first response, I had used information from my database. This is an error that slipped thru the cracks.

Reviewing the old Nebraska Test PDF files, I see that the MBHP rating for the W-450 is 52 as opposed to 51 for the W-400. However, on this PDF file, Nebraska has both tractors listed under test #533. This is probably where I screwed up entering data in my list. Since I saw the W-450 listed under the same test number as the W-400, I ASSUMED incorrectly that IH didn't bump the displacement of the W-450 when it came out, so they didn't need to bother with test submittal.

Thanks for gettin' me squared away.

I couldn't find in either C.H. Wendel's book or Lorry Dunning's book where the W-450 was tested. Can you help me on this?
