I am going to go ahead and put mains and rod bearings in my 41 H. First time and learning so here goes a question. I took the two bolts off holding one of the rod bearings on and the cap will not come off. I dont want to tap it to hard but what is the best way to get the cap to come down. I know it is a tight fit and dont want to break anything. If anyone knows any tips to advise a lost sheep please do so on putting mains and rods in. Thanks in advance.

I recently changed main bearings in my H due to low oil pressure with .002 bearings. I had trouble measuring my journals so I used plastic gauge on every journal before and after. Worked like a charm and have great oil pressure and motor is in spec. Make sure your caps are in the right position. (VERY IMPORTANT)

Hi BB, Just tap lightly on the rod caps and they should become loose. IH tractors usually have the
rods numbered. After removing a cap check it for a number. The numbers usually face the camshaft.
When in doubt mark the cap and rod with a spring loaded center punch mark. One punch on No1 rod
and two punches on No2 and so on.

You should "mike" measure the rod journal
on the crankshaft to see if it still measures standard and is not scored or worn. You can get
,002" undersize inserts if it is slightly worn beyond specs and the machined surface of the crankshaft is still nice and smooth. Mark and check the main bearing caps too. You want that crankshaft to have a nice machine surface so you
won't have bearing failure later. Take your time
rebuilding the engine and most mechanics will give you advice on any questions. Good Luck, Hal PS: Notice how the old inserts are installed.

I always use a block of wood between the hammer and a casting. That way you can hit it pretty hard without the risk of breaking anything. Tapping the cap is the ideal way to get it loose. You can also crank the engine (by hand) and when the crank tries to pull the piston downward, sometimes the cap will come off. I will also second what others have said about being careful to re-assemble properly.

BB I would get a manual to make sure you put the caps on correct and not think they are on right just because the tractor run the way it is. 40 years ago I saw H's and M's with the caps on back wards so in a 60 some year old tractor who knows if they are right. The number should go to the cam side if it was marked right.

BB,

Gently tap it on both sides; it will come.

Be sure you mark the caps....they have to go back on exactly as they came off.
