First let me start this is Aliis wd-45 not a farmall but I need some ideas! I just had a heart breaker last night on a wd-45 allis. started it up after a in frame rebuild New pistons, sleeves, crank bearings and gaskets. After assembly and valve adjustmentit fired right up and it ran ok it was missing just thought I needed to adjust the valves better. Last night dad called and said he started up the WD and it ran for a few minutes and started knocking and quite. and then he could only roll it over a half a trun. I don't know what happened. yes there was oil and pressure and coolant. Makes me sick. what could have happened? head was redone new valves and torrqued to spec and the rod bearings were torqued to 40 pounds from the self locking ones as I was told from here. We put standard crank bearings back in becasue the reading was so close to normal on the crank. Any ideas where to start?
possibly a broken ring?
Chad

Hi Chad, Check No3 rod when you pull it to see if may have been bent. That valve may have damaged your new piston and the cylinder head too.
It only happened on a VW for me to lose a valve.
They were known for doing that. Hal

I will check #3 out fully to make sure it is ok. good thing ws it happened at an idle and not high rpm.

Dad called and says its one of the vavles on #3 cylinder. the keepers are there but no vavle. So I imagine we have a bent valve now and I pray that the new oversized piston kit is ok. If it is bad I hope the shop that rebuilt the head covers the charges to get new parts.

Hi Chad, I'm glad you found the problem. It's
still serious, but I'm sure the outfit that did your head will make it good for your parts. Let us know what all happened. Hal

Chad,

They should also be responsible for any other damage plus parts and labor to get 'er going again.

Bad workmanship on their part!

Chad,

Stop right where you are at.

That machine shop needs to take responsibility for this one.....

I doubt if the piston is hurt, but you know you have a bent valve at the very least and maybe a cracked head.

I wouldn't do a thing until I talked to the machine shop..... .

Allen yes Dad is taking it apart as we speak and I will have to go there to help him take the head off we just want to inspect the damage before we get to excited. It is so much easier knowing what the problem is then not knowing. Now I just wonder how much damage and how long we have to wait for more parts.

Chad,

Yeah, ya never know until you get in there. Let's just hope all it is is a bent valve. But, it could have poked the silly thing thru a liner too. Then, you're looking at big bucks.

Good luck with it,

Allan

Hi Chad. I know that would be disheartening to
have that happen. Are you sure you put the new insert bearings in correctly so oil can feed your main and rod bearings? You're going to have to drop the pan and look at those rods and mains. Double check the inserts and inspect the crankshaft for any roughness. If bearings and shaft look OK, get a calibrated torque wrench. Call your local Allis dealer for the correct torques. This is critical to have the correct
clearances on your rods and mains. You can loosen
the rod caps and mains and see if the engine is free to turn. Good Luck, Hal

I had the same thing happen to me on a 560. The mains weren't torgued right. Those wrenches do go bad.

Had a similar heartbreak with a happy ending a few years ago. I restored a Super A for a friend and had just fired it up for the first time after a complete engine rebuild. It started right up, I went in the house to call Paul and took the phone out to the garage so he could hear his baby run. By the time I went out to the garage, about 10 minutes into the startup, the engine had stopped cold. I couldn't budge it even with the hand crank. After it cooled down I could still barely turn it by hand. I expected the worst but after quite a bit of troubleshooting I found it to be the governor pinion that was binding in it's bushing (also new). The gear is the smallest in the timing chain so there was a lot of mechanical advantage when it seized. The bushing was deeply scored, apparently a piece of foreign matter found it's way in there. This despite the fact that the block and head were professionally cleaned and I'm a clean freak rebuilder. I don't know if the Allis has a similar design but it's worth a look.

Chad,

Since it will only turn half a turn and it was knocking, that sounds like one of two things: either a bearing problem or you dropped a valve.

All the caps on right and in the right position? Are the keepers on correctly?

Tryin' to help,

Allan

As for the head and the valve keepers we had the head done so I hope it was not a keeper and as for the bearing caps I hope My dad put them on the same way. ug the agony
