Hi guys, Just bought a 966, and as they are very rare here in Ireland (only 2 or 3 sold new) was wondering how many were built in total? Mines a diesel with the 8 speed gearbox, no TA. I have to get a rear wheel centre as the casting on mine is broken where it engages in the axle shaft. Some one must have driven it with the clamp loose. As there are no 966 's being broken in Ireland or England I am having to get the part shipped from Canada. Its tough having it in the shed with the weather so good. Regards, Nigel.

Better make sure what size rim it has!!! Some have 34 inch wheels and others have 38 inch wheels. If I was going to spend the money to ship one I would go ahead and get a wedge lock since they hardly ever break and are more trouble free. Are you sure you can not fine a 706 thru a 1066 anywhere there that is being parted out. You need a wheel for a 3 1/4 inch axle. Good Luck

Hagan, Thanks for the replies, I hadn't realised that they came with 34 inch rims as well. That would be a sickener if having waited for the rim only to find it was useless! When you mention wedge locks what do you mean? Are they an add on to the standard wheel centre or a different centre altogether? Only ever got the later 1055/955 etc series tractors over here, mainly because they were built in Germany and France. Regards, Nigel.

I didn't even think about mentioning the size, the one I can sell is for a 38" rim. And, it's a "clamp" type.

The clamp type has 2 "c" shaped clamps each having 2 bolts (newer version) or studs with nuts that clamp the casting to the axle. One is accessed from either side of the casting.

The "wedge" type uses a wedge inside the casting that is tightened by one bolt accessed from one side of the casting.

Hope I haven't confused the issue here.

Mitch

Hey,Thanks for the info and the kind offer, May take you up on it if the guy I'm in contact with dose'n come through. Mine has the single bolt clamp system and 38 inch rims with 3 1/4 inch halfshaffts. This guy I'm dealing with imports tractors from Canada and the next container he has coming over he will put the centre in it. I can't complain about the price, about 300 dollers to buy it and ship it to England.Have to organise something for the last leg of the journey then. yours, etc, Nigel.

Hello Nigel,

If the 966 you have is has good as the 1066 I have, you'll love it! I've always ran green tractors until we bought this 1066 in 1995. For the money, I can't see having anything else.

Have you found a cast center yet? I have a good one here in the U.S. I'll sell you. It may cost less to ship one from Canada, but I have one if you need it. Post me a note if you're interested.

Mitch

Hi Nigel,

That 966 is one fine tractor...one of my favorites in fact.

But, I just cannot imagine one without the T/A. Seems like it would be on the order of a half a tractor or something.

At any rate, I know you are really going to enjoy that beast! Good luck with 'er.

Allan

Allan,

Most tractors we sold were without TA.

Hi Harold,

What were they used for? Just making hay and cultivating?

Thanks,

Allan

All field work (plowing, disking,, setting up rows, planting, etc). Anything to do with raising cotton and soy beans as well as other large acerage row crops. Used for most anything except rice field work. Most tractors were operated by "tractor drivers" rather than owner operators so everyone wanted to "keep it simple" and usually did not want TA.
