I have a question on governors on a M. The problem I am having is I only go to almost full throtle so I opened up the governor and was looking to figure out how it works and I think I found a problem but wanted anther opionion. I was looking at the counter weights that are inside and it seams to me that there should be a spring that hold them in the closed position while at an idle and when it speeds up the weight go against the spring pressure. When I look at mine the weights just flop around so it always wants to open up the butterfly on the carb and increase speed. Is there supposed to be a spring on the weights? If so were does it attach? Are they still avalible?

Hi, Paul No thats the way they are suposed to be when you open the throtle the weights come in then. The only thing you can do is there two adjustments one for low idel and one for high the lower bolt with nut adjusts for your problem . Then there there is the new spring if yours looks weak replace it. JON

Thanks for the info. Now back to the drawing bourd. I looked at everything in the pretty good and nothing is froze or have excessive were. The only way I can get it to stay down on idle is to have the top adjustment bolt loose enough that the spring forces the linkage to the carb to the idle possition. If I move the throtle just a little is starts working up to full throtle. When running and if I look under the inspection plate at the elbow everything moves real free and just above the idle possition on the throtle the linkage want to move to full throtle unless I gold it. Is there anything else I should look at to try to fix this? Doesnt appear to be any ecsesive were and the spring feels pretty decent

I have not tried to work on the H/M governor, so all I can do is read what is in the service manual: "The bottom screw sets the high idle -- out to increase speed, in to decrease speed." This adjustment is made with the throttle control lever wide open (rear position). With the throttle closed and assuming the carb idle screw is set to about the right rpm, 425 rpm: "The upper screw should be adjusted to just touch it's stop. At this setting the governor spring should be free; it will not be possible to set the low idle speed when the screw is adjusted so there is tension in the spring." "The linkage between the engine speed control lever and the governor speed change lever should be adjusted so that both stop screws will touch their stops at the extremes of the engine speed control lever movement". This is the meat of the description in the manual. If you have had the carb off remember that the carburetor throttle shaft must properly engage the rod that connects the carb to the governor, or nothing will work right.

I dont have my shop manual in the house but I just read this yesterday while working on my H The top bolt . put the throttle at idel and adjust the bolt so it just hits on the govener housing make sure the nut is good and tight. Spring should have no pressure on it at this time. Then pull the throttle all the back and adjust the bottom bolt so it just hits the housing.There is an adjustment at that elbow but I cant remember what its for at this moment. If this doesnt help maybe somebody else can pitch in. I do know this my Super M has a 4 weight govener in it and the H and probly your M has a 2 When I rebuild my H its going to get a rocket govener what a difference. JON

Thanks Jon for the info. That is the way I set it and it didnt make a difference. Up at the elbow the nut that is on there is all the way down to to bottem and there is not more adjustment left.

Your govornor is worn out.The pins in the weights are probably worn and the holes in the wts. themselves are worn.If you are just using the tractor for regular work you could get a rebuilt one from Hershal Adams for around $200.They work well for general things or for some pulling with a heavy spring.But for more serious pulling you might want something more.

Also, the holes where the spring attaches are probably worn out, you can weld, or braze them shut and then drill new holes. You can even drill in a slightly different location in order to tighten up that spring.
