560 with turbos?

A good friend of mine has asked me to find out if turbos were ever original equipment on the 560 series tractors. He found one with an aftermarket turbo on it but the seller claims it is a replacement for the original turbo which gave up several years ago. Neither of us has ever seen a 560 with a turbo, therefore our question. Did the 560 ever come with turbo or even have a turbo option? Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Greg: I never could figure why anyone would buy a turbo for a 282D 560. You could crank a 100 hp out of them just as they came from factory. I ran one for 11,000 hours in 17 years at 90 hp. In the end it put two pistons through the block on a silage blower, and scattered parts all over the barnyard.

The 560D and a 656D were the most economical horse power I ever farmed with. Repair bills on those two tractors were almost non existant during the first 10,000 hours for each. For the horse power put out, fuel economy was number one. Of 16 tractors that I farmed with over the years, from a Super A to a 1066, the 560 and 656 were tops in my books.

The TD9-92 series dozer in I think the late 60's to early 70's came factory with a TD 282 diesel rated at around 80 hp. I don't think they beefed up the motor, just added a blower and turned up the fuel. The time IH started selling a turbo for a 560, I don't know if it was the same one used on the dozer but would guess it was. It had a dry aircleaner about the size of a 1206's.

There was a IH turbo package that could be added to the tractor, it was a field installation only- believe it came out after IH ended production.

The IHC turbo field kit for the 560 was for high altitude use only. It was not intended to boast power for regular near sealevel farming. It was not even supposed to be sold to IHC dealers in the SE and I don't know where else, just available in IHC districts with lots of high altitude areas. I don't know what IHC clasified as high level. I would guess probably anywhere over 4000 ft elevation, but that is just a guess. M&W did have a turbo kit for the 560 that was available but if installed it would void the warranty. (Actually rear end is what would probably go rather than the engine if a failure was caused by the turbo).

I agree - allways heard that the week part of the 560 was the rear. The first ones produced failed with just the 6cyl in it. IH rushed out the 560 with and M rear ends not designed for the 50-60hp the 560 produced. You don't need a turbo to produce more hp - just turn up the engine as many 706's used the same one.

i wonder why the parts off a M will not interchange with a 560 rear?
do some reasearch on what the major cause of the problem was that caused them to go out,one of the things was oil as the 560 was the first one with hy-trans.
we have had a 560 with turbo running 115hp for the last 20 years with no problems.

Hi Ed,

Say, that's pretty steep. Do you use the tractor for hard pulling or is it mostly light duty work?

It is amazing that you've got the thing turned up that far and that it has lasted this long. I didn't even know they could be turned that far, to be honest with you.

Allan

To the best of my knowledge the 560's did not come with turbos, nor was it an option. However, lots of 560s did get turbos installed as an aftermarket item. I think M&W was the supplier of most of them.

No 560 656 or 706 with D282 6 cyl glow plug start diesel came with factory installed turbocharger, in fact the only machine that IH made was TD9B/92 crawler with this engine that was factory turbo, they did sell a pkg thru IH parts that you could add this, voided the warranty on entire tractor.
