The M stalled again

Today we put a bottle of dry gas and four more gallons of gas in the M, and my father tried to drive it home. He got most of the way here, but it stalled. Before it stalled, it got louder and then quieter again, and when it was louder than usual, it made some smoke. The smoke was usually blue, but once it made a little black smoke. It didn't make any smoke when it was running right. It did the same thing and seemed to be about to stall several times before, but then he was able to stop it from stalling by closing and opening the choke. For a while, it ran better with the choke closed. After it stalled, I removed the gas line from the caburetor, and the gas ran out all right, so I think the problem must be in the carburetor. What would cause this kind of problem?

Hi William, Rustyfarmall's advice is the best,
pull the gas tank and have it steam cleaned. That will remove any dried gas deposits and any dirt. Then rebuild your carb. I had the same problems on a GM car that kept stalling and pinging. Everyone said it was the EGR, that didn't help. I always thought it was a fuel problem. I silver soldered a 1/8 pipe fitting on
the fuel line and hooked up a pressure gauge. The
pressure was fine until you accelerated, then the
pressure dropped. I pulled the tank and removed the pump and vacuumed the tank. It was full of rust and krud. I installed a new pump and sock over the pump inlet. It ran like new car. Hal

William, when I got my M several years ago I started burning ethanol gas right away,it started cleaning the crud off the inside of the tank, I tried to spray fence rows with it, I didnt even get to the south end of the field & the sediment bowl was FULL, I cleaned it out & got the tractor back to the house, I had to remove the tank & take it to the neighbors shop , he has a steam cleaner, that cleaned a LOT of crud out & I have not had any trouble since & I am still burning ethanol & always will.

I agree with Rustyfarmall. Clean the tank. I don't know where some guys get the idea that gasoline and fuel doesn't age, but it does. When
it does it causes major deposit formation problems. All of the junk, particulates and such,
in the tank has to go by way of the bowl and then the carb. I am currently fighting with the same problem on an H. Being a little lazy I always look for a quick fix, but after flushing the tank several times, all I have done is plug jets in the carb. If you choke it it will run, but it has no power. Also I still notice it smoking sometimes, but when it runs okay it doesn't smoke. I am convinced that there are heavy deposits still on the tank walls.

I have been following your questions, and you have been given some good answers and advice. However, now, with your latest question, I think it is time to just bite the bullet,so to speak. You need to remove the tank from the tractor, and clean it thoroughly, or take it to a radiator shop and have it cleaned. It is also time for a complete carburetor rebuild, the crud that was in the tank is now in the carburetor. There are several things you could do, but in the long run it will be much easier to do it right and then your troubles will be over, at least the fuel related troubles.

The tank has already been taken off the tractor and cleaned with fuel oil, as I already mentioned in the post "M gas tank problem solved". The fuel oil was dumped out the hole where the gas cap goes. The place where the gas leaves the tank hasn't gotten plugged up since then. I told Rick what happened today, and he said he didn't think very much more rust would come out of the tank. He also said to put a fuel filter in the gas line, and told me he has one on his M.

When you say I need to remove the tank from the tractor and clean it thoroughly, do you mean you don't think it was cleaned thoroughly enough?

Fuel oil just simply will not cut the mustard, you need to get a bit more drastic. Muriatic acid is the only thing I have found that will remove not only the rust but also the varnish left from the gasoline. Do a search through the archives, you will find quite a bit of discussion on this subject.

Out of the blue, my H acted funny like that, it started blowing black smoke and then it quit. I thought that the float had hung up or sunk. After considerable fooling around, it turned out that the lever was loose on the choke shaft and the choke valve would close on it's own.
