steering quit working on 350 rowcrop

was out mowin today and a mile from home steering quit. shaft that goes into steering box on top turns the big gear but nothing else happens. i took the nut off but what next. do i disconnect the steering shaft and feed it out of the front nut on the bolster? what suddenly stopped working. how does the gear come out?

the shaft that runs up into top bloster via the frame does not move, so the problem appears to be in the gear box itself

A very common problem is that the upper bolster shaft breaks off at the thrust bearing.

If you havn't already, pull the 4 bolts off the top cover and remove it. I would bet that the key in the steering sector is sheared off. Should be fairly easy to fix if that is the case.

I'd guess it the splines are worn off of the short shaft just as it goes into the sector. If that's the case you can drill a hole through the connection and install a roll pin.
