When we start our 10 it rattles until the oil pressure builds up. Even if you shut it off for a short time, it will need to build oil pressure up again, it usually takes 4 seconds or so. Is this normal? It has about 200 hours on a major, but it has done it ever since we have owned it (about 750 hours).

Dan: First thing is=did he replace the front oil pump and seal. The 'o' rings can and often do fall from the groove in the pump housing and front timing cover grooves. That aside, the next place is the filters, do they have a check valve built into the base to keep the oil from draining upon shutdown? If not you have to fill two filters before supplying oil to the bearings. Believe me I worked on many of those engines and I will not kid you. That takes awhile to supply everything with oil. The other thing to ask whom ever did the overhaul, is did they replace the cam bearings as that would and could be the biggest problem you are having. I would myself use an external oil pressure gauge at the pressure sender fitting, and get a reading first hand at startup. See if it is coming up right away. Sorry I can't help more but their are many things to be considered. If you need more help please post again.

I have a 1066 the inj. pump rattles for a few sec. on startup, always has. I've heard others do the same thing I came to the conclusion it's normal. Although I cannot recall it doing it on a restart seems to me initial startup is only time I heard it. I'll have to pay more attention to that.

Our 1066's injection pump will rattle until the oil pressure builds.

What kind of oil filters do you have on it. The reason I ask is you know the filters are on this engine up-side down and the correct filters have A stand pipe in them so the hold oil so at start up you dont have to fill both filters before the engine gets oil. I an not saying to use Case/IH filters just make sure the ones you use have the stand pipe. Also they should not have a by-pass built into the filter. The filter base has its own by-pass. Just a few things for you to look at. Look at the easy stuff first.

Thanks RAS. I do use Case IH filters, what about the by-pass in the filter base? I never was very concerned about it until we got a 3588 recently. I don't notice the 466 doing it. Thanks again.

Dan,

Sounds like it is losing it's prime, eh?

I'd talk to the guy who did the major.

Allan

Allan:

That would be me. It did it before, and it does it now, I figured maybe it was normal. It is the only thing we have with that series of engine in it. What would cause it to loose its prime? Thanks for the response.

Dan,

Jim J. has a point.

Are you talking about that high pitched "rapping" sound when you first start it? The sound is akin to that of a ball-peen hammer rapping on a large anvil?

If that is what you mean, then that is completely normal for a direct injected engine. In fact, those old 360s & 414s were nortorious for that noise.

Also, many times they will make this sound after they have been pulled real hard for a long time, are good and hot and then allowed to set & idle.

My wife used to always bring my breakfast out to the field during spring work, I would just let the thing set there and idle while I ate. At 7am, it was still relatively quite in the countryside save for that tractor setting there "rapping" at idle.

Just guessing,

Allan
