I've got a really good head with bad valve stem guides. Lot's of blow by. Can anyone tell me how to remove and replace them.

Hi Tim, Did you have this blowby before you installed the new pistons and sleeves? Are you sure the rings are installed correctly? There is one side that is usually installed facing up toward the head.

If you're sure the rings are right, I'd pull the head and have it fitted with new guides and reface the valves. Blowby usually occurs when a high vacuum is present and a car with worn
guides will pull oil from around valves when coasting down steep hills. Then blows the smoke from the exhaust. Do you notice this blowby when tractor is under load, like pulling a plow?

The rings may not be sealed with the sleeves. Put it under load and see if this blowby
keeps occuring. Run it for awhile. Hal

Hi Tim, I had the same problem with an engine with
a lot of blowby. I pulled the head and found deep
grooves on one cylinder wall. This engine didn't
have slleves had to pull engine and get it rebored. Found a piston ring had broken and that scored the cylinder. These two guys gave you sound advice to take the head to a good machine shop and the crankshaft too, if it needs it. Hal

The valve guides are pressed into the head. Like the tractor vet said, it would be best to let a machine shop handle it. The will have all of the equipment needed to replace the guides and grind the valves and seats.

That is a job best left to a machine shop as the valves will need to be reground and as far as the blowby then that is a ring problem and you will need new sleeves and pistons .
