Can someone help me set the timing on a WD9 IH magneto? I took this one off to have it tested and now I think I may not have mounted it correctly.

Thanks for any help

Hi Jim from what your saying this has a CCW rotation mag so wouldnt you put the mag away from the motor then move it towards the motor to get it to trip? JON

Jon, you made me think, and thats good. But I checked my service manual and it works just as I said, put the mag top as close to motor as possible and then rotate out until the impulse trips. Thanks for making me think.

Craig, you need to find top dead center on #1 cylinder. Remove the spark plug and have someone crank the engine while you hold your thumb over the hole. You will feel air being pushed out when it comes up on compression. There is a timing mark on the engine crank pully that correspons with a pointer on the engine, line these up. Set your mag with the rotor pointing near the #1 wire and mount it loosely on the tractor with the top of the mag as close to the tractor as you can. Now crank over one revolution until the pully mark is again on the pointer. Now slowly pull the top of mag away from the engine until you hear it trip the impulse. Tigthen it down and it should be timed. Remember these mags turn the opposite of IH gas engines so wires to the plugs will attach in a counter clock wise pattern. Good luck.
