I was driving my H down the driveway when I started hearing a slight knocking noise. It appears to becoming from the area of the head. Is there anything I can do to try and determine what is wrong? I don't have alot of expertise on engines.

I dont' know if this is the problem or not, but I remember my dad's H started knocking all of a sudden. We pulled the oil pan and couldn't find any problem there. Then we discovered what the problem was. The screw that holds the choke plate in the carburetor came out and was sucked into the engine. That little brass screw was hammering between the piston and the head. I took the spark plugs out and found which cylinder had the screw in it. It then just took a screw driver with some grease on it and picked up the screw throught the spark plug hole (that's what is nice about big spark plugs). It ran for years after that with no problems. I had s similar noise in my H for several years. It would come and go. I thought for a long time it was a valve , but adjusting them never changed the noise. Well, about a year ago I found the noise. I was mowing hay and suddenly heard the worst kind of clanging and banging and the motor began skipping. I dropped the oil pan and it was full of metal. The noise was from a sleeve that was loose and jumping up and down. It sounded like a hammer tapping inside the motor. The H had been overhauled not long before I got it so I just rebuilt the one cylinder with a one cylinder rebuild kit. Now I have no tapping and the H runs great with no loss of power.

probibly best to have a real mechanic listen to it. Not nessasarily one of those $50 an hour guys, just someone who knows these old engines. Are there any antique tractor clubs in your area? Ask around and see what you come up with.
