I am trying to fix a charging problem on my grandfather's 1950 cub and have found conflicting information on what the settings on the 4 position switch do. The postions are "L" "H" "D" "B". I have read that L is for Low charge. H for High Charge, D for Dim, B for Bright. Is this true? if so which setting is best for charging? Also if the amperes gauge is showing a draw on the charge side does this mean that is in fact charging.

Thank you in advance

Red, Here's the deal I did as you said. The volt meter read 6 without the battery connected (just charged it) starts right up. With the throttle at up about half the amperes Gauge (on the cub) registers about 6 amp on the Positive side (right of center). This is with the switch on "L". When I put the voltmeter on the battery there is a negative reading of -.24 when I switch to "H" "D" or "B" it reads 0.00 and there is a noticable change in the idle (better)

With the switch on "H" the Gauge(on the cub) reads zero or maybe even a slight discharge. Turn to "D" or "B" and the results are the same , near zero reading.

I tried getting a reading with the voltmeter by placing the positive lead from the voltmeter to the cranking motor stud and the negative lead to the block and it gave me garbage.

I pulled the cable off the battery and the tractor ran fine (it has a magneto). Checked the battery with the voltmeter, dead 0.00 reading.

The positive lead from the battery is grounded directly to the side of the battery box (I didn't put the top on but that wouldn't make any difference would it?). The negative lead goes directly to the cranking motor. I checked the generator belt and it did seem a little loose but I doubt enough to effect it.

So Red, What do you think my next steps should be? new voltage regulator? Generator? or a freakin' hand crank?

Thanks again for your help...

You have the positions correct. L, H, D, B do stand for low charge (about 2 or 3 amps), high charge (about 10-12 amps), dim bulbs(low beams), bright bulbs(high beams).
The highest charge rate will be an the "H" position.
I don't know what you mean by "amperes gauge is showing a draw on the charge side", but if by that you mean the ammeter is showing deflection on the right side of it's center zero, then yes it probably is charging, assumimg that the ammeter is wired correctly. You can verify this with a simple voltmeter. Check battery volts with the tractor shut down, then start it and check again with the switch in the "H" position at half throttle. It should read a couple volts higher. If so, it's working OK.

Thank you Red Dave for the information! Where do I attach the volt meter? To the battery terminal? postive or negative? thanks again...

Connect your voltmeter across the battery. If your battery is covered, just check it at the starter terminal to ground. That tractor was positive ground from the factory, but somebody may have changed it over the years.
