My uncle has a 40 H that we can't get started. It will fire and then die. It won't stay running. I pulled the carb and checked everything over and it seemed fine. Gas runs out the drain when I open it. We checked the points and there is good spark. Could the coil be bad. The plugs are new.

EITHER THE PLUG WIRES ARE OFF OR ROTOR IS OFF 180 DEGREES, TIME IT FOLLOWING THE PROCEDURE IN A MANUAL OR IN THE ARCHIVES. wITHOUT A DOUBT CLEAN THE CARB COMPLETELY AND MAKE SURE THERE ARE NO PORTS PLUGGED. a QUICK ( CHEAP ) REBUILD IS A good idea as long as it is off. All a h needs is gas, timing, spark and it will run. Before you pull out the rings , do a compression test. Maine did the same thing after repacing bout everthing and it was the timing

Nick: When I am going to try to start an old tractor like your H, I replace all of the ignition
parts such as: points, plugs, rotor, cap and wires
in order to give the old girl every advantage that I can. Make sure that the timing is on as CNKS suggested. When you are at TDC the rotor in the mag should be pointing at No.1 position on the cap which should be labeled on the cap with a 1. How-ever some after-market caps don't have it. If it is an IH original replica it will have it. The rotor will be pointing at about the one o'clock position. You might want to do a compression test. It should have 110 to 125 lbs. compression. My partner and I are just finishing up restoring a Farmall M. It would "pop" but not run. It had no compression when we checked it. We pulled the rods and pistons and found the rings to be seized in the piston grooves. We pulled the old rings, cleaned the pistons and grooves, checked the dimensions against the specifications, installed new rings and it ran. You might also pull each plug wire one at a time, pull back the rubber boot and make sure you have fire at the plugs. Our Farmall M ran, but it didn't run right. We discovered that one of the new plugs was defective. Don't give up, the H is a great tractor.

It's either out of time or wired wrong. Timing is set with #1 (next to radiator) at TDC. #1 is marked on the mag cap, rotor turns clockwise as viewed from the rear, firing order is 1342.

1940 FARMALL H: HOW LONG HAS IT BEEN SINCE THIS OLD GAL WAS RUN DAILY? CHANCES ARE YOUR PISTON RINGS ARE SET IN CARBON AND FLASH RUST, SO YOU ARE NOT CREATING A DECENT VACUUM TO PULL IN THE NEEDED FUEL/AIR CHARGE.
YOU MAY HAVE TO TEAR DOWN THE ENGINE, BREAK OUT THE ORIGINAL RING SET ON EACH PISTON AND INSTALL
NEW RINGS. CROSS-HATCH EACH CYLINDER LIGHTLY WITH A 3 STONE HONE TO BREAK THE GLAZE AND HELP SEAT IN THE NEW RINGS.
I DON'T THINK YOUR PROBLEM IS ON THE ELECTRICAL SIDE THIS TIME.
SIT DOWN WITH AN ENGINE MECHANIC GUY AND DISCUSS
YOUR PLAN FOR RECOVERING THIS DECENT RIG TO A FULL WORKING STATUS. GOOD LUCK.

She fired just on the ether we put in it. We pulled it quite a bit but it didn't wanna go. It just fires off the ether for a few seconds.

If it's only firing on the ether that sounds like a fuel problem. If the jet's plugged the fact that you get fuel to the carb, even runs out the drain, doesn't help. Try cleaning the carb. Not just spray carb cleaner but take it apart. make sure the main jet is clear. Good luck,
Wm

If you have another old girl, connect the two pulleys together with a belt. It will get your tractor up to speed and you can tinker with things without wearing down your battery or burning out a starter. Just make sure you spin it the right way,use the fan to get direction correct....good luck.

Hi nick you say it fires and dies if it just fires it sounds like the timing might be off 180 deg. Or if it actually runs how long will it run a min a few seconds. Let us know a little more JON
