I have never put mains and rod bearings in anything before but want to do the work myself. Could someone give me step by step how to do this properly so I dont end up regreating tring. I have the oil pan down and have pulled the center Main cap off and just want some pointers on getting the top bearing shells out and also pointers on how to turn the engine to get the rod bearing caps pointed down as I am doing them.. Hope this is not a stupid question but help would be appreciated.

Hi RH, Mark is giving very good advice to you on
installing the main caps and rod caps. We always
tried to spin the oil pump before an initial startup to be sure everything was lubed. When we
did diesels we used a pressure vessel and put a pipe tee in where the gauge is and flowed oil in
until we got pressure on the gauge. We also used this when you couldn't spin the oil pump. Hal

RH,
I just replaced my main bearings in my H. The first thing I did was to get a manual. The second thing was to keep my bearing caps in their proper position.(VERY IMPORTANT). The third thing was I checked my bearings with plastigauge before and after installation. (Put plastigauge between the cap and the bearing and retorque caps). I charted all gaps on paper so I wouldn't forget. This allowed me to see the gap between the bearing and the crank. Then I removed the the upper bearings with a thin strip of metal that would flex around the crank. Look at the back of your bearings to see what size they are. STD, .002. Remember that the gap clearance spec. calls out .001 - .003 If the gap is larger than .003 than you should put in oversize bearings. Replace all bearings and lube well while installing. Put your caps on and torque to spec. and you should be ready to go. It's not hard just time consuming. Hope this helps.

Mark

Only oil the bearing surface, the back of the shell should go in dry.

The IT manual is a good compliment to the IH service manual. Get them both.

Thanks Mark & Dave! I’m ready install new bearings in my SH (soon as the brown truck delivers ‘em...) and until now have been uncertain of the R&R process. Your advice helps a bunch!

Note: On my SH each rod cap is clearly stamped with it’s respective cylinder number. Did not however see any ID marks on the main caps. So before I took the mains down I prick-punched each cap with for position and orientation in order to return them same as before. And yes - I'm figuring to check the new bearing clearances with Plastigage before buttoning everything up for good...

RH,This how I replaced my bearings.
1. Remove all bearing caps, keeping them in order that they were removed and which side faces to the front, loosen the cap bolts slowly and each cap bolt at about the same torque.
2. You should be able to see the exposed crankshaft but it won't fall out. Now use a flexable putty knife to drive out the other half of top MAIN bearings, tap the knife between the crank and main bearing cap until the 1/2 bearing comes out the other side. The piston can be slide up the cylinder to pop out those bearings. The top bearing has a tab on it so it can only be driven out one way.
3. New bearings should be prelubed with a quality grease, use just a thin coat on them and then reverse the removal order and torgue each bearing. Goodluck with the project.

RH I would get a manual as kfox said on these old tractors you might have one some one put the caps on wrong. I saw this 30 years ago when they were not all that old.

RH,
I'm not trying to be a smart nelic here, but if I was going to spend the money for brgs & gaskets, I would buy a shop manual. At least the I&T manual
It's around $25.00 at Tractor Supply, Rural King, etc. I think the Case/IH dealers also have them. A little more money and you can get the O-fical IH repair book from the dealers, or binder books.
Hope this helps ya out. Ken
