I have a Woods L306A on a Int. 140 which takes a single drive belt about 240 inches long. Has anyone tried using 3 shorter belts- one from pto pulley to center sheave on deck and one each from center to outside sheaves. Center sheave on deck has 3 grooves so it might work.

Had an A FARMALL w/L59 Mower Did the belt change
but had to change the Drive Belt tightener to a
flat one as compared to the origional grooved one
because of the twist in the belt. Otherwise it worked great. Costs less too. Did have to adj the height of one of the outer pulleys.

Back in the '70's, I worked for the local school corporation in the summer, and I was mowing with a Farmall 140 with a Woods 59. I found that there were about a HUNDRED ways to put the belt on WRONG, and only ONE way to route it correctly. With a correctly routed belt, there won't be any extra twists in it, and with a little attention it should last a good long time.

I have a Woods L306-A on a IH-140 tractor and a L59 on a Cub Low Boy. I have always got great belt life from both of them using Woods belts. From my experience, I don't believe that I would change anything. I have had to replace bearings in the idlers a couple times.

My L59 Woods on a Super A came to me well used, belt and all. I thought the belt was about shot but here I am 4 years later still using it. I do plan to buy the expensive Woods belt next time - they seem to last. I've heard to keep it tight but I run it just tight enough so it does not slip in the tallest grass. I have had trouble keeping the twist correct, but I attribute that to a worn belt that is just about round. I keep an eye on it for getting too loose or too twisted wrong then stop and fix it.
Overall I think it's a reasonable setup. Now if I start going through alot of expensive belts that would be different.

John, You may already know this but the pulleys are set at differant hights if you don`t get the belt on the right one it will come off very fast. You should look at the outside pulleys and tell wich one is higher on the shaft and the other will be lower.

Thanks for the advise about the pulleys. My rear idler setup has 2 idlers which are at different heights on the bracket. The belt runs on the bottom of each pulley and I believe the twist in the belt is between these pulleys and the center sheave on the mower deck. It seems that I get more than the required twist and I can't correct this. Any help would be appreciated.

If you don't have a manual for the mower, get one to make sure you have the belt on correctly. I used an L59 Woods on a 140 for years and never had much trouble with the belt. When the belt gets some wear, it is more of a problem. Also, use the belts from Woods, even though they may cost more. Also I noticed more problem when the mower was 20 years old. I think wear on the idler pulleys may make the belt more prone to problems.

I have thought about doing that with mine, you would also need to add a couple of idler pulleys somewhere in the mix so you could tighten the two short belts. Had troubles at one time keeping the belt on, but once I figured out just exactly what was meant by a half twist on one side and three-quarters twist on the other, I haven't had a speck of trouble, and if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

You're right about the need for two idler pulleys-sounds like its more trouble than its worth.Maybe I'm not getting the belt on right because it won't stay on and i'm using a 2 foot bar to tighten the 2 rear idlers. The twist might be the problem but it seems that the belt has to twist naturally to get it over the two rear idlers and up over the large pto pulley.
