We are thinking about switching a 706 gas over to diesel. What is the best diesel engine size for this tractor? What about IH truck motors? Which IH motor is most readily available in the Northeast?
Thanks.

The correct engines for the 706 were the D-282 and the D-310 German. The D-310 replaced the D-282 in Nov. '66 at tractor serial number 37237. The D-282 pretty much bolts in, since it's block was very similar to the gas block, but, it was a little underpowered in the 706. The 310 is a very high-quality engine, but it will take a lot of work to put in, and will be very expensive. Parts like the hood will be very hard to find. Just about any IH diesel will work, if you use the right frame rails and modify a few parts. With enough work, you can put in a 361/407 out of the big 06 and 56 series tractors, or a 400 series engine out of the 66/86 series.

Or you could sell it to me and buy a diesel..... ...

Seriously, I'd sell it and get one an originally powered diesel. It takes alot of work to put a D310 in one..... ....And IMO it isn't worth the work to put a D282 in it. We have a 706 with a D282 and it is a dog.

My brother might be willing to sell it. Make an offer and I will let him know.
He bought the 706 because he needed a bigger tractor for his round baler, but he sure doesn't like paying for the gas! Lately we have been baling with the square baler anyhow (when it stops raining for an hour or two!), so he might be willing to deal. He might also be interested in a trade.

Matt if you have an ealy 706 then the D282 will fit ok if you want the D310 the side rails need to be longer or if you have a late 706 then the side rails would fit the D310 or you could use a D358 in the late 706.
