Removal of Brake Right Brake Drum on a Super-A

I'm working on figuring out how to get a stuck brake drum of the shaft that it is mounted to, which is the right (long) side of my Super-A. The left side drum came or easy. The right appears to be faily stubborn and likes where it's at. I've loosened the retaining screw and added P'blaster and penetrating oil but it still doesn't want to come loose. Does anyone have any suggestions. The idea I've come up with, since this shaft is so long for normal pullers, is to get some long 3/4 threaded rod and attach a washer and nut on the spaces that are cast into the brake shaft. The have a thick steel plate made with a hole in the middle that is slightly larger than the splines. As where the splines ends the shaft gets a bit thicker in diameter it should prove to be a good mount point. Then put the three threaded rods through three other holes drilled in the steel plate and secure this end with nuts. I should be able to slowly tighten up on these and pull off the drum. Has anyone tried a similar proceedure or have a different method?

I had the same trouble with my A on that side. I needed to replace the seal behind the drum anyway, so I just kept heating with a torch and eventually it expanded enough to let go of the drum. That much heat does ruin the seal though like I thought. I had a new one on hand. Don't know what it is about right side brakes. Everyone seems to have problems with them.

Thanks for the info. I'll let you all know how it works. It was the only way I could see of removing it.

Glad that GeneB responded before me, because he has much more experience with Farmalls than I do and has helped me on many occasions.
However, I also had a fairly stubborn drum on the right differential shaft. I used the method you described, with two threaded rods. I rested the plate on the face of the shaft near the splines. Then tightened (I mean very tight, just short of stripping the threads) up the threaded rods. Then gave the plate a few good blows with a heavy hammer, as if you were trying to drive the shaft out of the drum. (There is no need to support the drum while hammering on the plate; inertia will take care of that.) Tighten threaded rods up again and give it another few good whacks. In my case it came off in about 15 minutes. Use penetrating oil liberally! The differential side end of the shaft may mushroom a little bit from the hammering on the plate, but I don't think that causes any harm. Good luck. Hendrik

Hope you have better luck than i did with one had to cut it off with torch tried your method but it would not move. Give it a try as the axle will not come out without removing the brake drum. If you can find a press large enough you could press it off. good luck
