I have some questions about the IH 656d.
I looked thru the archives but didn't find all the anwsers I wanted.
1. How many gears does this tractor have? (not hydro)
2. What is the road speed in high gear.
3. How well is the the system hydraulics for loader work?
4. How well will it handel a 9' haybine and 5x6 roll baler?
5. What years was it made. 6. Is the 282d (i think) engine a 4 or 6 cylinder.

Overall opinion from anyone who has owned one..likes and dislikes for this model?

Thanks

I pull a 12' new holland haybine and a new holland 851 round baler with a 560d, (same motor)
with no power problems, however it seems a little light for the haybine. My 560 has a 2000 loader and handles 5.5 x 6 bales with ease. Buy a GOOD set of batteries and check your glow plugs and it will always start without either or block heater. I work my 282 hard and it loves it. Very smooth power and just over a gallon of fuel per hour, try that with a gasser. I have a neighbor with a 656d hydro and it goes 18 to 19 mph.

Wayne: The 56 series Farmalls were the very best as a group that IH ever built, and the 656 was no exception. I question the speeds guys are telling you, however I did have 16.9x38 tires on mine and that does make quite a difference.

On the starting issue, good heavy 6 volt batteries hooked in series with 1 gauge cables and soldered ends. Read up on the proper operation of glow plugs for a 656 and use them as directed, not as most of your friends will tell you they think. Remember in the diesel evolution these came right after gas start and pup start. DO NOT CONFUSE THE OPERATION OF FARMALL GLOW PLUGS WITH OPERATION OF FORD AND CHEVY PICKUPS, COMPLETELY DIFFERENT.

I did my Farming career with 16 different tractors from a Super A to a 1066. I had at least one Farmall tractor from every series Supers to 66 series. Without question 560D and 656D were the most effieient horsepower I ever had on farm. I put 11,000 hours on 560 and 15,000 hours on 656. I can also tell you that repair bills were almost non-existant on each under 10,000 hours. The tractors with few repair bills are the one's to own in my opinion.

I have a 656D gear drive and I love it. I can't tell you about running a loader, but the hydraulics are strong. We only have a 7' haybine, but you don't know it's back there. I'm sure it would handle a 9' no problem. I use mine to pull a 4x16 plow, 12' disk, 10' cultimulcher and it does all of the hay baling. The only downfall I see is it is a little light for the power it has.

I have to disafree with Big jim on the hydraulics on the 656 the relief valve should have 1600 PSI stanped right on it now if westendorf has put smaller cylinders on his loaders 1600 PSI may not work as good but westendorf loaders were on many westendorf here in Iowa where the loaders is made. As for the glow plugs that is the where the tractor is made and if the engine is in good shape they don't start that bad, do you not thave to chock a gas to start it in the winter.

I stand corrected. I was thinking of the hydraulics on the 560. As I remember they did upgrade on 56 series with a higher PSI. You probably could get by with 1600 PSI on most loaders without going to bigger cylinders. I know for a fact the older hydraulics will not lift a big bale without going to 3" cylinders.

I know the Kelly loader on my '66 Farmall 504 will lift more than the front end on the tractor can handle and it has 2 and 1/4" cylinders on it. I use it often to move 2,000 baleage round bales in the yard to the feeder although you have to take it slow.

I think a 656 would work great on any loader as long as you don't rush your shifts.

Haven't owned one but have worked with one quite a bit. Neighbor has a Utility model I used with a 9' Heston haybine last weekend, handles it with no problem. Plus is it seems to run very economically on diesel. Downside is it uses glow plugs to start. In 90 degree weather if you stop it for 15 minutes you have to use the glow plugs to start. In cold weather you use up all your battery heating the glow plugs and have little left to run starter. That seems to be a common story with others that have or have had one. I like the tractor. If it can survive with what little maintanance my neighbor does on his it must be tough.

Answers to your questions:

1) 5 speeds forward and one reverse. Plus with the TA this doubles the number of speeds, thus actually giving you 10 speeds forward and two reverse.

2) High gear in direct drive (not TA) is 15.9 MPH with standard 15.5-38 rear tires.

3) This system will work good on an older loader since these depend more on mechanical leverage. If you try to put a late model loader such as a Westendorf or Allied quick tach, you will not have enough lifting power to even pick up a 5x6 bale unless you go to 3" cylinders (2 1/2" are usually standard). These old farmalls run low pressure hydraulic systems- only 1150-1250 PSI. Most modern systems are 2500 PSI or better.

4) They will easily handle a 9' haybine. They will also handle a 5x6' round baler.

5) Years made: 1965-1972

6) Diesel engine is a 282 6 cylinder.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the anwsers to my questions.
I have some more questions...
1. Did any of the 6** series go any faster in road gear 15 mph is slower than I like, as I spend alot of time going from feild to feild.
2. What is the difference between the 656 and 686 other tha the german deisel.
3. Is the gearing any better than the h & m. 4. Does the ta freewheel on this model.
Thanks for the help. This will be good stuff for the archives...

Wayne yes the TA free wheels I don't think there is much differenc between 656 and 686 or the 666 the 666 has US made D312 very nice engine 686 has the german. As for the rear end of the 656, 666 and I would think 686 much heaver that 560. Axel same size as 560 where the wheel goes better brakes because you can remove shims to adjust never knew them to grab like 460 560 bigger bull gear roller bearings in rear end.
