Too Fast , or too Slow...?

I have an IH 574 diesel with a 2200 loader and I'm wondering if I run it at too low an RPM. It seems to handle anything I can throw at it at 1200. Baling with a NH 66, 5' hogging grass and brush, hauling 2'x 14' Hemlock logs. I'll run it at 1500 or better when using the loader, but that is primarily to coax performance from the hydraulic system. I have a tendency to run at a lower RPM and a higher gear. Never run a diesel tractor before, Just tired gassers; JD B, Farmall letter and number series. My JD 420 dozer seems too crave the throttle, but this 574 does not. So, am I hurting the machine, being stingy with the diesel fuel, or demonstrating good operator instincts, (for once)!?

Jared, Hello from East Wells,Vt. When Im brushhogging with my 32hp diesel, I dont run the rpm all the way up. With what Im cutting, 500rpm at the pto does a good job cutting. Basically whatever works for you. When I was cutting the fields with the 42A with the sicklemower I hardly used any rpm at all. Like CNKS said, you need enough rpm to run your hydraulics properly and the rest is up to you!

Hi, Diesel engines have much more low end torque than gas engines. Therefore you can run then at 1200 RPM and the engine will be producing near max torque but not max hp. My personal opion is that it is easier on the engine and drive trian if you go down one gear and and increase the RPM.
If your 574 has TA you have plenty of gears to choose from.
If the tractor is being used under load I like to keep the RPM between 1500 & the rate PTO speed RPM which is around 2100 on my brother's 684D.

You are correct to operate a loader on this series of tractor you have keep the RPM around 1500 to get good hydraulic flow.

My 2 cents
JB

Tractors are designed to be run at full throttle with a full load. With a lighter load you can gear up and throttle down. With a loader, you have to use common sense and use whatever power and gear suits the job you are doing. Your pto produces optimum performance with a bush hog at 540 pto rpm, at or nearly at max engine rpm. Gear selection depends on how big the grass and weeds are you are mowing and how rough the ground is. You are not hurting anything, gas or diesel, IF you are not overloading the engine, either with too much load at full throttle or part throttle.
