IH Grain Drill HELP!!!!!!

I have just purchased an IH (mabe McCormick) drill. Its an 18 hole, with rubber tires, and two trip lifts to raise each section. There is a small metal sign inside the drill that says how to set it and it is dated 1947 ( i think). My dealer thinks its a Ih #10 but i think its earlier than that. The thing that is different is that on the drive system, there is a huge gear that has different diameters you can set the drive gear on.

So, what model of drill do i have. Are there any tricks to getting the trip to work again. And i am wanting to plant soybeans, it says i need to flip some covers in the grain box and it shows putting some reducer or something by the seed meetering sys. Do i need to put this in or can i not have it in there and plant beans accurately or should i improvise something.

Thanks

Chuck

It doesn't quite sound like my drill, but when I was trying to solid seed soybeans, I used the wheat settings and came pretty close. If you are going to cultivate, it might be a lot easier to use an old corn / bean planter. You could just put a piece of tape over some of the cups to get a wider spacing, but then you might have a hard time getting the right plant population. Kind of late for soybeans, ain't it ?

The most trouble I have with the trip is that the grub screws come loose or the lift gets clogged up with grease and clover seeds. Loosen up the grub screws on the drum and move it over enough to dig the crud out of the works.

(1). Sounds like you have an 18 X 7 MF Double Run drill. I'm relying on what info I can get from the parts manual. They were built between '49 and '57. (2). Manual shows the reducers you refer to. Grain Cup Reducer, part # NA 2 563. Have no idea where you might find them. Doubtful if dealer can get them anymore, although it won't hurt to ask. I only have the parts man. on hand right now. Also have operators man. that may lend some needed info. If your interested in more info, send me an e-mail by clicking on "send e-mail" above, and I'll get the op. man. We also have a "junked" drill like yours, if you need anything.

It is probably a M or MF series, made in Canada by IH Hamilton Plant, only way I could ever determine parts needed was by casting numbers on any of the parts on drill, IH was very good about any cast iron part having a ID number, 10 was newer low wheeled rubber tire drill, these parts books are hard to find for the old M series.

Well...it does say "made in canada" on the side. Although it uses what i would call low wheeled implement tires. its just standard implement tires. What about the plugs in the grain feed???
