Can someone explain the difference between the SM, SM series II, and SMTA series III grill?
Thanks,
Glen

Someone can correct me, but I believe the Stage 1 SM grille does not have the two wide spaced holes near the top of the grille. Both the Stage 2 and the SMTA have the holes.

I have a stage II 53 Super M Sn.43973. It is original as the day my dad bought it new and it does not have the wide spaced flats or holes in the grill.

No argument-- I was mostly going by what my late 53 stage 2 Super H has, it does have the holes, assumed it also started with the Stage 2 Super M, obviously I was wrong. The flats Wardener mentioned could have started about the time the SH got that grille, just a guess, since they can use a version of the same cultivator.

FWIW:

I have SH 24168 that has the big holes

I have another SMTA that has a cultivator bracket but it attaches to the small holes.

I have a neighbor with a SM that has the flats but no holes punched.

I believe the later SM grills with the flats were a transitional part to make the change over from SM to SMTA easier. It was probably done to reduce storage space requirements at the assembly plant. They could stock one grill to fit two models. The holes were probably punched somewhere near the assembly line during the transition.

I have never understood the big holes. There is nothing behind the grill holes that could receive a stabilizer rod or bolt.

I have a late '52 stage 1 SM. It has does not have the holes you describe. Except for the "IH "emblem instead of "Farmall" on the top, the grill seems identical to the one on my '49 M.

The SMTA has the two large holes. Some part of the later SM producton had the flats formed in the grill. The SMTA holes were punched into the flats when production started in Feb '54. I own the 177th SMTA and it has the holes.
