I have a 1951 farmall M that I purchased 2 years a ago. It runs fine really for a M but when I hear it runing next to another M it just sounds louder. The the man I bought it off of said it was just rebuilt. But he had his friend do the work so he didnt know what he did to it. The only other time Ive heard a tractor get "louder" is if someone puts a cam in it. But my tractor doesnt seem to have a lope or anything. But I can run the tractor with the fuel screw clean out of the carb. Any thoughts ???? thanks for your time

It has to do with the compression of the engine, the higher it is, the louder it will be, or maybe not necessarily louder but more of a thunder. Also has to do with how well the valves are seating, and even the condition of the manifold gasket. And last, a manifold that is clean inside will give a better ring to the exhaust note than a manifold wich is full of carbon and rust.

I'm not going to pretend to know the answer to your question, but I will tell you that I have a '49 M and a late '52 SM. With identical mufflers, under similar loads or just running with no load, the M is louder, and always has been. Both have M&W overbore kits.

On a similar note, when I was a kid, my uncle had a Farmall H. We had one also, and even with the same type of muffler, his had a distinctly different sound to it. I always supposed it might have been because ours had the distillate, or low compression head.

That was my assessment of the situation.

I'll bet you the two tractors have different mufflers. Just because they look the same externally doesn't mean they're the same internally.

well right now none of the other M's Ive had it next to have mufflers on them all straight pipe and even still with the muffler on its just sounds differnt and I really dont think its gett'n enough fuel either cuase I can take that fuel screw clean out of the carb and it still runs but no fuel comes out of the empty hole and Ive got a 3/8 rubber line to the carb. Im thinking of putting a 450 carb on it. what do you guys think.
