I know it is impossible to tell where the leak is comming from until I get the engine appart. But can anyone tell me is the engine for a 36 F20 has a known leak problem area.

The engine has always had antifreeze so i'm sure it didn't crack from freezing. The engine starts and runs fine when I add coolent. I'm guessing the head gasket, but the ammount of coolent collecting in the oil pan seemed to be fairley large for the small time I had coolent in the engine to run it while moving to the shed etc.
Any ideas would be appreciated.

I have a "36" F20 which my father farmed with for many years. I started showing water in the cylinders so I disassembled it and found that the head was cracked. I tried to have it repaired but found that it had previous been welded and the area around the crack was too brittle to repair. I had to replace it. I ran across a couple more heads which had cracks in the heads between the cylinders. I finally bought one and had it repaired. So, apparently, it is a common thing for a crack to happen.

Hi Bill, you might want to take your inspection covers off and see if you might have a piston sleeve O-Ring leaking. the sleeves hang down enough if there leaking you should be able to tell if they are wet or not. If not that I would look into the head gasket. Good luck Shawn

Bill - A friend narrowed the leak zone on his Ford 8N by noticing that the coolant would leak down only to a certain level then remain constant. Ruled out the head gasket and proved to be an internal block crack in the lower part of a cylinder. Hope it's only the head gasket. Pete
