H Starter Question

I have a '46 H that starts great when cold. If you shut it off after it has been running for awhile and try to restart it, the tractor acts as if the battery is low on power and cranks over very slowly. If I wait 20 minutes or so, it cranks starts right up. The battery is less than a year old and the cables and clamps are original and in very good condition. I have cleanded all the connections as well. It is a 6 volt system and the generator is working properly. I believe the problem is in the starter but the brushes appear to have at least 50% remaining. Does anyone know the current draw for the starter or have any suggestion on troubleshooting this problem? Any help is appreciated as I use this tractor daily.

Leon,
Sounds like a couple of pins in the armature may have come unsoldered. That is typically how a starter acts when that happens.

I don't see how it could be the starter. It sounds like you have bad insulation or conductor somewhere, probably one of the cables is cracked. They can also look good on the outside and be broken inside, I'd replace all the cables between the battery, starter, and ground first.

Leon. i had a problem with my starter on my H something like yours.
there are one or two lugs that have wires soldered in them. sometined those lugs get hot enough to melt the solder causing a bad connection.
and sometimes a bad connection doesnt show up on a bench test. it has to be under a load.
im not saying this is your problem, but its one thing to check out. take a close look at those lugs.

good luck

If you use the tractor for work and you have the time convert it to a 12- volt system. This will rid yourself of lots of your problems. If originality is a problem it can easily be converted back to 6-volt. The farmalls I use for daily work I do convert them to 12 volt. I have a couple that I have left original because they are show quality. My 2-cents

A couple thoughts:

1 – Is the ignition timing set to spec? If timing is early (BTDC) it can a create a lot more work for the starter as it must crank against firing pressure near the top of each piston stroke. Can easily be tested by cranking with the ignition switch off. If the engine cranks faster with the ignition off, retard the timing.

2 – The starter may have become heat sensitive. This seems unlikely however as the starter lives out in the relatively cool space behind the engine. (This was more of a problem on some 8 cylinder engines where the starter is tucked between the engine block and the hot exhaust manifold...) Test by taking battery voltage readings when cranking both cold and hot. If it’s a temperature-related starter resistance problem, battery voltage will be HIGHER (starter draws less current) when the starter is hot. If you find that’s the problem best take the starter to a starter shop for a going over.

I don’t know offhand what the current draw is for a 6 volt starter on an H – I’d guess 300 amps or so. Battery voltage however should not drop below about 4 volts when cranking.

I have found where rust or other corosion has developed between the endplate, armature housing, and starter drive housing causing a poor ground. If you are up to it mechanically, disassemble the starter and polish all the areas where steel meets steel to ensure that you have a good ground for the starter.

Good luck!
