I have a 1984 International 484 tractor and I need info on the fuel filter set up. The filter on the right side of the engine is a IH part#
3218794R1 and is a spin on. On the left side of the engine there is a canister with what appears to be a petcock valve in the bottom. It is painted red just like the tractor color so it seems it has never been changed.
Is the left side filter a filter or what?
Should there be two spin on filters?
Any help appreciated.

I now have all the info you ever wanted to know about the 484 fuel filters. After taking off the original filter (under the pump) on the left side of the engine I see a P/N 145743094 and the word germany. This is a Bosch part number and I am sure the original filter(1000 hours). Crossing the numbers you get Fleetguard FF5135, Baldwin BF587-D, Hastings FF834, Purolator F60152.
On the right side of the engine (primary filter) there was a Case IH filter P/N 3218794R91 I replaced it with a Fleetguard FF5171 and the secondary left side of engine with a Fleetguard FF5046.
Its still a little confusing because if you use the original Bosch numbers to cross reference filter manufacturers you get different filter numbers than if you use the Case IH filter numbers. The Bosch ones are the correct numbers because the fuel system is designed by Bosch.
I wish I knew what the Bosch number was on the original primary filter.
Thanks for all the the help.

Hi, my brother has a 454 and a 495 both with 179D engines. The 454 is older than your 484 and the 495 is newer. The 454 has a single spin on canister fuel filter with a nylon drian cock on the bottom, located on the right side of the engine. The 495 has two CAV fuel filter cans that have a glass bowl on the bottom with a threaded rod going thru the center. Again located on the right side of the engine. The first filter has a drian cock in the glass bowl.

Usually it is only the primary(first) filter that becomes clogged or accumlulates water in the bottom. We normally only change the secondary fuel filter every other time that we change the primary. It is most important to drian the water out of the bottom of the fuel filter frequently, especially if you use the tractor during the winter months when condensation accumulates in the fuel tank.

My 2 cents
JB

Hi Jay,
I've got a '79 484 and bothe filters are the same metal canister type with the glass sediment bowl underneath and a brass threaded bolt going up through the centre of the filter. I'm almost positive that the owners manual says that both filters are just the same, but the secondary filter (closest to the front of the engine) is only changed infrequently.

Jay, it's been a few years since we had a 484, so I don't remember it very well, but our 485 had 2 spin on fuel filters, a primary and a final. I'd guess that the canister type is the final, or has been a replacement from an older tractor.

I have a 1983 484 and it has a filter on both sides spin on with the same part number. When I need to replace I go to the local dealer ask for filter to fit 484 and that what it calls for. One other thing I have a friend with a 385 he was bushhogging broke the housing on a stump he said it was pricey, your may have been replaced with the other style????? /
