Reminds me of my younger days when I was a smoker. Sometimes at night would not have match or lighter. Muffler would be glowing red while running but before I could stop and get down to light cigarette it would cool down even if I left throttle wide open.

NDS: And they worry about fire. I smoked a pipe, can you imagine trying get a few pieces of hay or straw burning long enough to light pipe. Wood matches in your pocket were more dangerous. I still have a scar on my right leg from lying on side under baler and matches caught fire in my pocket. That was 35 years ago.

Hi Kim, I would check that timing to be sure that it isn't running a little retarded. Temp. looks good. Hal

As the others below note, that's pretty much normal for heavy load operation. Not unusual also to have a lick of bluish flame out the top of the stack. However if the flame is distictly yellow the carb is set too rich.

So long as the coolant temperature remains reasonable (less than 210) I wouldn't worry about it!

I have seen several engines do this. I worked at a facility dyno testing engines once. The cell lights went out when the test began - the manifolds on the Quad 4's glowed bright red! Kind of cool - but all that heat has to go some where - better out the stack than into the engine. Irv

Have you tried opening the high speed mixture screw 1/2 turn or so?
Lean fuel mixtures create high exhaust temperatures; richening the fuel mixture a little will help cool the combustion temperature and the exhaust valves will thank you also.

KIM: Many an old Farmall gasser mufler would glow red at night. 300 was probably the most predominate. I've seen mine at night, on disk harrow or field cultivator, with close to a foot of flame above the mufler. The H would do it also but not as pronounced. My 130 will do it, in fact it will burn the insides right out of mufler, in about 600 hours. I went to using a straight pipe on 130, for that reason.

My neighbor had a 350 with a mounted corn picker. The muffler would glow red hot all the time under load. Kinda neat at night to see him picking corn with the glowing muffler. He didn't like it, was always scared of a fire with all the corn trash.

Are you talking about a heavy load? If so, it might be normal. I have observed an M Farmall powering a feed grinder at night, the muffler was glowing red with an actual flame from the top of the exhaust stack. This tractor was running great.
