Friend of mind just bought an A with both. Is there a diagram on here somewhere so I can see how it's wired, or somebody please explain this to me. Thanks

The coil in the mag probably failed, or a PO just wanted battery ignition. You disconnect and/or remove the original coil inside the mag, and connect an external automotive type to the points inside the mag, usually also installing a condensor to match the original application of the replacement coil.

Since the original mag setup needed no external power supply, and the "kill" switch was used to short the primary side of the mag coil to ground to shut down the engine, the switch must be changed from a 1-wire ground-to-frame-when-off to a 2 terminal switch that is used to switch battery power to the new coil setup "ON" for run, "OFF" for stop, and a wire must be run from a source of battery voltage to the switch, and then the old mag "KILL" wire can be connected to the other terminal on the new switch, and the other end connected to the new coil.

Reid - There’s nothing complicated about a setup like that. All it does is bypass the magneto’s internal spark-generating coil. Instead it uses battery current and the mag breaker points/condenser to fire a regular (battery type) ignition coil. The coil then sends high voltage back to the distributor end of the mag for distribution out to the plugs. Bottom line is the magneto performs exactly as a battery ignition distributor unit (and is wired up the same).

It’s done on account of cost. It’s generally cheaper to buy/install a battery coil than to replace a failed mag coil or balky impulse drive.
