M's poor performance

the M is running weak. it sounds pretty good at low RPM but when you pull the throttle back, it sputters and pops and maybe will even out but runs really bad under load. should the timing be advanced or retarded to fix this. i had the mag gear out and was putting it back with trial and error. also, is there any reason that the two middle plugs would foul faster than the outside two or is that just a random occurance due to random faults in the wires or cap or plugs? thanks

Jeff

Is it 12 or 6 volt? I had a 300 in the shop the other day with a bad miss in the engine, would idle all day long till I reved it up, I found that the plug gap was at .028, I opened them up to .032 and miss was gone,, then the plugs fouled out due to the plugs fouling before the repair, new plugs with a bigger gap, and no more trouble. For a power tune, I have found that setting timing at 28 degrees advance makes the best power, Have you messed with the carb at all? ChadS

Are you absolutely positive that you have the timing right??? 1-3-4-2 Plugs could be fouling if they are not firing at the right time?

firing order is right, if that was messed up it would run way way way worse. i don't think i could swap wires anyways cause they are cut to fit the cylinder they go to and wouldn't fit any of the others.

Jeff, are the plugs fouling out from oil/carbon buildup or are they wet from gas? Have you swapped the inside ones to the outside?

they are getting messed up with carbon/oil type of stuff. I have replaced the inside ones but have not run the tractor enough to see if they foul again.

Jeff, sorry I didn't have a chance to get back to you sooner. I agree with Bob M. I'd try a hotter plug.

Jeff - Could be the spark plugs too cold. For some reason these engines tend to foul the 2 middle plugs more easily than #1 and #4. If you're using Champion D-17 or equivalent, swapping for a hotter plug like a D-21, Autolite C86, etc. can work wonders.

Other things to check:

1 – Magneto in good shape? Breaker points clean and properly gapped (0.013)?

2 – How about the plug wires – are they solid copper? (Auto-type RF surpression or "resistor" wires do not work very well with tractor magnetos...)
