I agree with pete's suggestion about the distributor cap. Could be arcing between plug wire towers (inside or out) or two plug wires could be arcing together.

Is the backfire comming from the intake or the
exaust? If it is backfiring through the intake
it could be from a lean fuel air mixture. Backfire through the exhaust indicates some
type of timing problem posibly a sticking valve
or maybe arcing in the distributor cap.

Maybe try running some gasoline with 10% ethanol through that M. The ethanol will absorb the water and get it out of the tank, carburetor etc.

*disclaimer—this is only if your fuel system is CLEAN. Ethanol is a wonderful cleaning agent and will not only get the water out but other crap in the tank too!

Just another thought...could be an exhaust valve sticking open. Maybe there is heavy carbon build-up or the valve is slightly bent and sometimes sticks open. If a batch of new gas doesn't help, I would pull the valve cover and check out the valve operation.

Just a thought.

interesting thought, had a valve job done, but would'nt it be a consistent problem. [only sticks when hot or cold] ??? good thought....

I've concidered that, there has been noticeable condensation on top of the float bowl, changed gas, added heet and still no changes, thanks mag man

Where are you getting your gas from? If the new gas came from the same tainted supply as the old, then its no wonder there was no change.

different gas, different octane used. how about a cracked intake\exhaust manifold...
