Our 12 finally layed down and died yesterday. At just over 10,000 hours we sure can't complain. It has been an excellent tractor. It got extremely hot once, and that took a few hours off her life. What is the difference in the engine in the 1256 vs. the 14, if any?

When I rebuild her, if possible, I was wanting to know if the 14 had bigger pistons, or a different crank or what? Out of curiosity, no one has got a 407 laying around do they?

Update: Took it apart today. Teeth from one of the timing gears were laying in the pan, no visible damage to valves or cylinder tops, 3-4 bent push rods. We will probably remove engine from frame because of how we have the tractor split and the stands we use. Any idea on what caused these teeth to fail? Thoughts from you guys about what to and what not to replace? We will probably do a complete overhaul, but maybe skipping the cam if it looks undamaged and the lifters are all right. There is no scarring in the sleeves, and you can only feel the slightest rise when running your finger from the wore to unworn part of the sleeve.

Thanks for all the info RPM

DT407 in both tractors but not the same internal parts, early 407 blocks in 1256 were different, 1456 had larger wrist pins with rods to match, which took different pistons, inj pump drive was splined into pump, otherwise late 1256 block & head, crank, cam, oil pump, gears, cooler was interchangeable.
