i see that theres a guy on classified ads selling a M TA diesel and i was wondering what its worth is. he wants $10,000. Is that a good price, or is he high??

They will be priced in the $5000 to $10000 range, restored -- but for $10000, it better be fully restored. The M through SMTA (actually through the 450) have heads that are prone to cracking if not properly cared for. For $10000, he should promise without qualification, preferably under oath, that the head is good, along with the rest of the tractor.

cnks- what causes these heads to crack? are they just poorly casted, or is it something to deal with the start on gas/switch to diesel? or something else. I am a little under-informed on those engines.

I have never run one of those, but my understanding is that before shutting off they need to run at idle for several minutes to cool off, rather than parked and shut off after a hard days work.

If you want to pay that then that is up to you. Whatever the buyer and seller agree on that is the price. Personally, I would not pay any more that half of what he is asking, but then I don't really need/want one for my mini-collection. So I guess it is whatever you think is fair--keep in mind that the production numbers on that version are low.
