Did I smoke my generator?

I was trying to get my grandfathers 53 cub to start charging today and I tried to polarize the generator by touching a piece of wire to the BAT and the GEN posts on the regulator. Instead of looking I assumed they were the same posts as on my 50 C and I unknowingly connected the "L" terminal to the "GEN" terminal. The tractor was charging before but I have been using it for a couple of days and last night the battery was completely drained when I tried to start it this morning. I think the regulator is not grounded or is faulty because he has had trouble like this before. This was the first time it has been used since he passed away over a year ago. Battery was dead when I first went to use it. Today I tried to test the gen by connecting the jumper from the "F" terminal to the ground when the tractor was running and there was no charge indicated on the gauge. I know the gauge is working because it has for the last two days before the battery was drained.
I then jumped from the "BATT" to the "GEN" and there was no sign of charging on the guage.
So did I "let the smoke out" of the generator.
If so what do I need to fix it? Did I burn the wires to the brushes off or something like that?
I can probably do the repair work myself. Does someone sell a gen. rebuild kit or can I get these parts from the local alt. shop?

Dog,
Disconnect & reconnect a known hot battery regards of positive or negative ground. Then turn your key on (whatever switch, toogle...etc) with your piece of wire touch battery to generator on the regulator & you should hear it cycle. If it just sparks change out your FRIED regulator.

Dan - I agree with the NE Cowman below. Aside perhaps from a direct hit by lightning it’s pretty hard to “let the smoke out” those old generators. More likely it’s got a busted brush, a bad connection inside, etc.

These kinds of problems are easily repaired at home. Your local starter/alternator shop will stock repair parts (brushes, the ball bearing and bushing for the armature, etc).

I doubt you smoked the generator, They are pretty forgiving. But maybe it was already bad?
