tic, tic, tic.....bang!

I have an International 544 (68) that is making some strange noises. We haven't run the tractor much the past few years but it always cranks right up and runs great. About two weeks ago I was bush hogging a friend of mines property and I hit a stump I didn't see. Well, it appears the clutch on the hog was too tight and it broke the bottom bearing on the blade shaft which made the blades run like a poorly hung ceiling fan.

That however, is not my problem. Since bringing the tractor back to my place, everytime I go into reverse there is a loud ticking noise (I say ticking because I don't know exactly how to describe it). It is coming from the rear end (directly beneath the seat) and sounds like metal hitting metal. The noise increases with speed. Also, it is loud in reverse, but I swear I'm hearing something going forward just real faint.

I'm quite sure the jolt it took from the bushhog caused it, but I have no clue what to do. I would normally take it to the mechanic, but I need this thing working yesterday. Anything you guys could suggest would be extremely appreciated.

Thanks

more than likely you broke a tooth off a gear, i have a 450 that someone hit something and sheared the pto drive shaft off in the trans. and destroyed the independant pto. unless you know what you are doing and have the time to tear her down, i'd take it to a repair shop

Take it to an IH shop and have them look at it. I worked at an IH shop, and many people try to patch or get by and all it does is cost them in the long run. I've had more then one tractor come in with hydraulic filters that had the IH stamped on them, and I remember one 826 that had been repaired for years by the farmer and when we got that in, everything we had to take apart needed replacement. Just fix it right from the get-go, and you will have trouble-free use for years.

The Farmall “M” had a notorious habit of loosing a ball from the inside axle bearing. This ball would then sometimes “ride” on the bull gear making a “tic” noise, but in reverse it would somtimes wedge between the bull gear and the rear end case making a louder noise. Worst case the ball would actually break the rear end with a bang when backing up. Thought I would pass this on for you to consider as a possibility that something in the PTO are may have broken off and is doing something similar.
